[Re Netanyahu betrays what's best for Israel, Feb 2, '15]Kudos to Alon Ben-Meir for exposing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wrong-headed policies, which are threatening relations with the United States and isolating Israel further from the rest of the world.
It would be well to remember, for those who suffer from convenient amnesia to further their own agendas, the Prime Minister and others have been predicting since the early 1990s, that the next year, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. This is for almost a quarter century and their predictions have proven to be false.
Time and time again, his national security people have told him to stop this tall tale and his demonization of Iran and yet, he continues. Perhaps the Prime Minister knows that if he repeats a falsehood loud enough and long enough, people will believe him. Fear is a great motivator to drive people to the polls. And, in the six years as Prime Minister, by crying wolf constantly (as in nuclear armed Iran), the Prime Minister has found this also a good distraction from the hard work of making peace with the Palestinians.
Then, egged on by his Republican cheerleaders and Israel-can-do-no-wrong crowd in the US, there is his audacity, and his abhorrent, shameless, self-serving attitude toward the President of the United States. No American president has done more for the security of Israel than President Obama. And should the President succeed in engaging Iran, it will make Israel more safe, not less. Surely, the Prime Minister knows this, and yet, he obsessively persists in his behavior which is endangering Israel's national security.
The question must be asked: Is it not about time for the electorate in Israel to say that they treasure their special relationship with the United States and no longer care to listen to anyone who would jeopardize that relationship and with it, the national security of Israel?
