First Trump fumbled an opportunity to condemn the racists stoking violence in Charlottesville, blaming "all sides" for the unrest.

Then it took him two days to actually denounce white supremacists and neo-Nazis. Which, after he issued the statement, he made clear he did so only because of the public outcry and pressure from his staff.

And then the kicker is he said he is seriously considering a pardon for Joe Arpiao, the Arizona sheriff who ran a program of racial profiling in violation of a court order. Arpiao was convicted in federal court, but Trump doesn't seem to think that was appropriate, calling him, "a great American patriot."

Paul Ryan and many of his House colleagues - to their credit - were quick to issue far stronger condemnations than Trump was able to muster. But none of them seem to take issue with Trump's behavior.
