Student loan debt has reached a crisis point. Across the country, millions of Americans now have student loan debt collectively totaling more than $1.4 trillion -- and it just keeps getting worse.

Instead of helping these students and graduates succeed, the Trump administration just raised interest rates and is now saddling students with an even more crushing burden.

I grew up working class, and I was the first in my family to graduate from college. My parents couldn't afford to pay for me to go, but I worked two jobs and took out loans to make ends meet. My college degree helped me start a successful career in Nevada as a computer programmer.

I believe it's our responsibility to strengthen the ladder of opportunities for our kids. But with higher education costs spiraling out of control, the American dream is falling out of reach for too many families.

That's why we need real action and meaningful reform in Congress now - to control tuition costs, move toward debt-free college and give borrowers the right to refinance their student loans at current rates.
