Friends,

If you're like me, you've spent the last few days concerned, upset, and disturbed about the hate-fueled rallies planned and attended by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia. this past weekend.

I wanted to send a note to underscore two things: how important I believe it is for everyone in this country to unequivocally denounce injustice and bigotry, and how inspired I am by the coming together of communities across the country to unite against violence and hate.

The sad truth is that right now we have a president who refuses to take responsibility or demonstrate leadership at this critical moment. His words yesterday were disappointingly too little and much, much too late. A strong denouncement of hate, discrimination, racism and white supremacy is the only acceptable response to this weekend's events and on this account, Donald Trump failed.

In the days following the hate-fueled rallies at the University of Virginia, however, I've been able to participate in events in my own community and been heartened to see events all over the country where people have come together to speak with one voice. We have chosen to lift up the values of diversity, inclusion, and fairness that truly define who we are. Our collective voice has never been more important to protect the most vulnerable among us--together, we will always be stronger.

Continue to speak up, continue to take a stand against hate, and continue to call out acts of racism and injustice for what they are: unwelcome in our country.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, but thanks for joining me in the fight for what's right.
