Tuesday - September 23, 2014 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements QUAKER MEETINGS FOR WORSHIP COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER MILLER FARMS COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT PCW FALL SPEAKER SUSAN CAIN - OCTOBER 7 GAME TIME! GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS ADMISSIONS DATES FOR CURRENT FAMILIES BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE POTLUCK HOSTS STILL NEEDED Other WHY IS BREAKFAST SO IMPORTANT? QUAKER QUOTE MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY This week’s query: Where is a place you can truly be yourself? This week’s assembly speaker: Liz Weintraub is a disability advocate and self-advocacy specialist for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL). She has been a member of the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council where she recently completed a two-year term as chairperson. Liz and her husband Philip live in Maryland. This week’s Northwest Current correspondent: Simone Arrington Students have now received their Middle School laptops. Please encourage students in grades 6, 7 and 8 to keep up with their chargers. A piece of tape to reinforce the name sticker would be helpful, and we have reminded students to wrap them carefully before they put them into the carrying case to avoid fraying wires. Math Olympiad Update: There seems to be some confusion about the Math Olympiads. If your son or daughter is interested in participating, they do not need to register or do anything else ahead of time. When the contest date is announced, interested students simply need to show up. Lauren Lamb will register everyone after the first meeting. Update for 5/6 parents: There have been some questions about equipment needs for 5/6 PE. These are the only items that will be required during the year: l Uniform shirt and shorts l Water bottle l Combination lock l Running shoes l Cleats l Shin guards and socks l Mouthguard l Bathing suit (cap optional) l Sweats for cooler weather (do not have to be SFS items) Students are welcome to bring their own tennis rackets, lacrosse sticks, etc., but families do not need to purchase these – the athletic department has items to lend for the 5/6 sessions. Students may not be unsupervised on campus after 3:50 p.m. (2:20 on Tuesdays). The Middle and Upper School libraries and all athletic facilities are not options for students after school. Information about the Middle School aftercare program is available on the website. Students who attend after-school programs here at school are not allowed to leave campus (for example, to buy food) and then return. All structured after-school activities provide snacks, and we feel it is safer for students to be taken care of here. Important change: we are focusing on purchasing food for these programs, but we are asking that students bring their own water bottle – this is a healthier choice than juice! Back-to-School night is next Thursday, October 2. We will begin in the Meeting Room at 6:00 p.m. with a short general meeting and then move to the Middle School; refreshments will be available in the Meeting Room lobby area. Parents will also pick up a schedule for the evening in that area. Many teachers use the time during the general meeting to get their classrooms ready; we ask that you not view that time - or the evening in general - as a time to drop-in for private conversation about your son or daughter. Conference days are the last week in October. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please call the Middle School office no later than next Tuesday, September 30, to sign up for child care. Students may be dropped off at the Wannan Gym, next to the Middle School playground. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 8:30 p.m., and students may be picked up in the Dining Room. Call the Middle School office to reserve your space for child care. Diversity Spotlight: As we help our children make meaning of the violence occurring around the globe, we have decided the focus of MS diversity work this year will be on peace. Our theme is: “Peace is not just a word, it is a behavior. What have you done for peace lately?” Our programs and initiatives will encourage students to reflect on the following types of queries: How are you the change you want to see? Do your daily actions in our community reflect what you believe? Do you follow through on your word? We will support the development of “peacemaking” competency skills, including conflict resolution, empathy, openness, flexibility and personal responsibility. At the first 7/8 A to ZSU meeting we began to outline our work this year. The 7/8 A to ZSU will meet every third Friday of the month. Later this month we begin the Heritage Speakers Club and the 5/6 A to ZSU “affinity” groups for students who are interested in the work of diversity, inclusion and justice. Faculty have begun advisory lessons on freedom and the violation of rights. Teachers are also planning lessons to assist students to discuss the events in Ferguson and intolerance around the world. Finally, ask your children about the pictures in the Daily Bulletin announcements that teachers read each morning … we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! Announcements QUAKER MEETINGS FOR WORSHIP Save the Date! Quaker Meetings for Worship welcoming parents and caregivers are coming up. At Meeting for Worship, the Sidwell Friends community practices traditional Quaker worship. Parents and caregivers are invited monthly on a Thursday to worship with Middle School and are invited quarterly on a Sunday to worship with the Sidwell Friends School Community. l Thursday, October 16, 8:10 - 8:45 a.m. Robert L. Smith Meetinghouse with the Middle School. Parents and caregivers are invited to worship with the Middle School staff and students. Arrive at 8:05 a.m. or earlier to settle in before students arrive. l Sunday, October 19, 10:30 a.m. - noon, Robert L. Smith Meetinghouse with the Sidwell Friends Community. Join students, staff, families and alumni to worship with the Sidwell Friends community over Homecoming Weekend. Worship between 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., followed by refreshments. If you have questions, please contact Middle School Quaker Life clerks Virginia Avanesyan, avanesyanfamily@gmail.com, or Amy Henderson msausten@mac.com. COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER The 5th graders enjoyed great weather and good company at the first hangout of the school year. The master veggie cutters were out in full force, cutting bucket loads for Martha’s Table. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped make the day a success. Upcoming for September and October: l September 22 - Toiletries Collection (to benefit A Wider Circle) begins (ongoing through October 9) for 7/8 Service Days. Collection bins (labeled “Toiletries”) are located in the Middle School lobby near the front desk. Please bring travel size toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream), toothbrushes, razors, etc. l October 9 – 7/8 Service Day – Details TBD. Contact MS Community Service Co-clerks Eva Xanthos at eva.xanthos@verizon.net or Lisa Arrington at arringtonlp@hotmail.com or your Grade Reps for volunteer opportunities. MILLER FARMS COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT Join the Upper School Community Service Committee for a morning of gleaning on Saturday, October 11, at Miller Farms, 10140 Piscataway Rd, Clinton, MD 20735. This is a great way to get out, enjoy some fresh air, good food (there is a bakery with fresh donuts, baked goods and ice cream, as well as a farm market and barbecue stand) and fellowship. We will be gathering at the parking lot of Miller Farms at 8:30 a.m. and heading to a nearby field to pick crops for a few hours before heading back to the farm store and then back to town. We are often joining other groups of people from the DC area so this is a great way to connect with others and share stories as we pick the foods that will make their way to those in need in our community. Please RSVP to Matt Fraidin, mifraidin@yahoo.com. PCW FALL SPEAKER SUSAN CAIN - OCTOBER 7 PCW_Susan_Cain_Event_Flyer.pdfTo celebrate its 50th Anniversary, the Parents Council of Washington (PCW) invites all SFS parents to attend a very special Fall Speaker Program featuring Susan Cain, author of the New York Times Best Seller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. This free event will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, at Holton-Arms and will also feature cuisine from several renowned local chefs including Jose Andres, Nora Pouillon, Robert Wiedmeier and John Snedden. Please see the attached flyer for details. PCW is a non-profit organization fostering communication among parents, students and schools within the greater Washington, D.C. independent school community. Please visit the PCW Website for more information. GAME TIME! GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS This week’s featured team is Girls Varsity Tennis taking on the Stone Ridge ‘Gators at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26. At 3:30 p.m., we’ll have a pre-game party for tennis fans of all ages in the Class of 1960 Garden behind Zartman House. MS students grades 5-7 must be with an adult. Please remember that in tennis matches, spectators cheer after the point, not during the play – please be considerate. Spectators are encouraged to share their photos of the game by tagging @SidwellFriends with #GoQuakers or by email (webbk@sidwell.edu). Congratulations to Stephanie Everett ’15 for last week’s winning photo. Next featured game is Boys Varsity Soccer v. Potomac School on October 2 at 4:30 p.m. ADMISSIONS DATES FOR CURRENT FAMILIES In an effort to work more closely with current families and faculty/staff who are applying a child for the 2015-2016 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2014. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2015. The application process is only for students who do not currently attend SFS. This is not re-enrollment for currently enrolled students. The online application is available at http://www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions. BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE Please join us for a query-centered discussion of Sidwell Friends School as experienced by black alumni. Former students will discuss the challenges they faced as well as the impact being a SFS student has had on their subsequent academic and professional careers. Mark Chichester ’86, Ericka Blount ’90, Lauren Brownlee ’01, Modi Oyewole ’05 and Destiny Franklin ’13, will reflect on their time as SFS students and offer strategies for success to current students and parents; some panelists will also discuss their experience parenting or teaching in the community. Please reserve time on your calendar on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. We will be gathering in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Upper School Campus. Light refreshments will be served, and care will be available for children who are PK-age and older. RSVP by Friday, September 19 to Hayes Davis at davish@sidwell.edu, and please indicate in your response the total number in your party and whether child care will be needed. POTLUCK HOSTS STILL NEEDED Our room parents and team parents have done a great job rounding up hosts for the fall potluck dinners. Thank you to all the families who have graciously opened their homes for this wonderful event. We may still need hosts for Sandy Dennin’s class. If you are able to host, please contact your room/team parents. Other WHY IS BREAKFAST SO IMPORTANT? How many times have we heard, “Breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day”? Well, that’s because it is. Skipping breakfast is like attempting to drive your car on an empty tank. You can try it but you won’t get very far. Breakfast is the fuel that gets us going in the morning, helps us and our children to concentrate, fully participate in a stimulating conversation, provides us with one of the most important nutrients - iron - and will more than likely provide us with the energy needed to participate in physical activities. So it’s really important that we take the time to fuel our children’s bodies before we send them off to school. Any breakfast is better than no breakfast, but try to stay away from sweets (doughnuts, pastries). The key to a well-balanced breakfast is ‘variety’: grains, protein, fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese and yogurt. Here are some helpful traditional breakfast ideas: * Eggs * French toast, waffles, or pancakes – try whole wheat or better yet whole-grain * Cold cereal and milk * Hot cereal with dried fruit * Whole grain toast, bagel, or English Muffin * Yogurt with fruit * Fruit smoothies (the real kind, not that syrupy stuff) Some might think it strange but yummy ideas: * Banana dog – peanut butter (obviously for those who do not have a “nut allergy”), a banana, and raisins in a whole grain bun * Breakfast taco – shredded cheese on a tortilla, folded in half and microwaved; top with salsa * Country cottage cheese – apple butter mixed with cottage cheese * Fruit and cream cheese sandwich – use with strawberries or other fresh fruit * Sandwich – Grilled cheese, or another favorite * Leftovers – they’re a great source for all your proteins and minerals and not just for dinner anymore The following ideas are great to send along with our middle schoolers for their midmorning snack or even if you find yourself in a hurry. Here are some quick breakfast ideas for on the go: * Single servings of whole grain, low sugar cereal * Yogurt * Fresh fruit * Whole grain muffin * Trail mix of pretzels, dried fruits, crackers and dry cereals QUAKER QUOTE "The meetings of early Quakers were frequently disrupted by angry mobs, their meetinghouses were vandalized and burned, and they were themselves subjected to imprisonment and cruel treatment by officials of the state. Such persecution continued until 1689 and the so-called Glorious Revolution, when a Toleration Act was adopted that gave legal sanction to the principle of religious liberty...Yet, like the early Christian church, the Quaker movement gained more adherents despite - or because of - the persecution. Some historians claim that the Quakers constituted ten percent of the British population by the end of the seventeenth century." ~Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the parent community at Sidwell Friends School.
