Tuesday - September 16, 2014 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements ADMISSIONS DATES FOR CURRENT FAMILIES GAME TIME! FALL SEASON EVENT #2 EVENTS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE POTLUCK HOSTS NEEDED Other FOLLOW THE SCHOOL ON SOCIAL MEDIA QUAKER QUOTE MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School US NEWS Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Middle School queries for the week are written by the students in the 7th grade Quakerism and the Arts class. They are part of the daily bulletin and are read at Meeting for Worship each week. Student queries begin this week. This week’s query: How can you manage your studies and your social life in this coming year? Assembly: The Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra Students will be getting their school IDs this week. These contain a chip that allows students to use the printers at school, so students will want them handy. If a student loses his or her ID, he or she should see Mrs. Porter to order a replacement. If you missed the laptop orientation meetings, there is lots of information to be accessed from the front page of the SFS website, Middle School tab, MS Laptop Program. On the right side, you will find important documents as well as a Power Point presentation on Parenting in the Digital Age and the presentation from the laptop meetings. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tracie Yorke, the Middle School Academic Technology Coordinator. Back-to-School night is Thursday, October 2nd. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please call the Middle School office no later than Tuesday, September 30, to sign up for child care. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end by around 8:30 p.m. for all students. 7/8 Parents: are you struggling to keep up with the athletic schedule for your child’s team? Sync school calendars and team schedules with your electronic calendar via iCalendar feeds! Log in to the Parent Portal and click on iCalendar feeds (upper right). You can select the specific calendar categories you want to create a single, easy-to-manage feed. You can also choose all of the teams you want to follow and create a single feed for game schedules. Please note that we recommend subscribing to the iCalendar feeds so you will get the latest information on cancellations and room changes. (If you just download the calendar, the information is only as current as the day you download it.) If you have any questions, contact webmaster@sidwell.edu. 7/8 Parents: a reminder that communication from teachers about academic concerns will be sent by interim reports. Occasions that might prompt an interim include a pattern of missing homework, a grade of C- or below on a major assessment or a series of quizzes, behavioral concerns, or a significant change in a student’s performance. Interims are also used to recognize significant improvement or achievement. Interims are posted in Educator, and you will receive an email notifying you that it is there. If you receive notice of an interim and you have difficulty opening it, please do not hesitate to contact the office for help. If you wish to follow up with the teacher, please do that directly. Sixth grade teachers will begin to use interims later in the school year. Are you new to the Middle School? Lots of information about daily life in the division may be found on the Parent Portal of the website. On the Parents Association Middle School page there is a box with a link to a document called “Nuts and Bolts: Frequently Asked Questions about the Middle School.” It’s a good place to start if you have a question. Student hangouts are beginning with the 5th grade hangout this Friday. Students have been reminded of these guidelines: - Students must sign in and then stay at the hangout until they are heading home. Students who are being picked up early should let a chaperone know that they are leaving. - Parent chaperones will announce the boundaries for the event, and students must stay in those areas. - A service activity will be a part of each hangout. We expect that students will participate in that activity for part of their time. - Students should be sure that they are clear about where to meet their ride at the end of the hangout. If something does not go as they expected, they should check in at the Middle School office or the Security Office to get help. - The general school rules of behavior apply for hangouts. This includes clean-up of any trash. Two more after-school club options this week: - The Middle School Art Club. Any student is welcome to drop by after school in Rick Honn’s room from 3:45 p.m. - on Mondays. - 5th Grade Drama Club with Ms. Eliza, every Wednesday in room 111. In 5th Grade Drama Club the students will explore the creative process through theater games and improvisations. The students will read scripts and discuss them with their peers and will develop and express their ideas through role playing. The emphasis of the 5th Grade Drama Club is development of interpersonal communication skills for personal growth and discovery. Announcements ADMISSIONS DATES FOR CURRENT FAMILIES In an effort to work more closely with current families and faculty/staff who are applying a child for the 2015-2016 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2014. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2015. The application process is only for students who do not currently attend SFS. This is not re-enrollment for currently enrolled students. The online application is available at http://www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions. GAME TIME! BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE Please join us for a query-centered discussion of Sidwell Friends School as experienced by black alumni. Former students will discuss the challenges they faced as well as the impact being a SFS student has had on their subsequent academic and professional careers. Mark Chichester ’86, Ericka Blount ’90, Lauren Brownlee ’01, Modi Oyewole ’05 and Destiny Franklin ’13, will reflect on their time as SFS students and offer strategies for success to current students and parents; some panelists will also discuss their experience parenting or teaching in the community. Please reserve time on your calendar on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. We will be gathering in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Upper School Campus. Light refreshments will be served, and care will be available for children who are PK-age and older. RSVP by Friday, September 19 to Hayes Davis at davish@sidwell.edu, and please indicate in your response the total number in your party and whether child care will be needed. POTLUCK HOSTS NEEDED Now that school is in full swing, please consider hosting a potluck. Fall potlucks are an enduring Sidwell Friends tradition where small groups of families from your child’s class or team gather together to share food and fun. As a host, you have the flexibility to pick any weekend date in October or November that works best for your family. If you are able to host or have questions about hosting, simply contact Beth Zeugin at bczeugin@comcast.net and tell us the dates that work for you and the number of families that you would like to host. Typically, 6 to 8 families including the hosts attend each potluck, but smaller or larger potlucks work as well. Other FOLLOW THE SCHOOL ON SOCIAL MEDIA "I downloaded this great picture of my son at the LS Spring Festival!" "I loved the commencement speaker!" "Did you see that Madeleine Albright spoke on campus?" There are so many activities at Sidwell Friends, and social media is a terrific way to make sure you don't miss out on great stories and photos. In addition to keeping current with sidwell.edu, where you'll typically find stories or news, be sure to follow Sidwell Friends on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. QUAKER QUOTE 'Quakers' or 'Friends' are now used interchangeably to describe members of the Religious Society of Friends, but when George Fox and his fellow believers first began to meet they called themselves the Children of the Light or Friends of Truth. In 1694, Fox recalled the incident that coined the term 'Quaker' in his Journal, "Justice Bennet of Derby, was the first that called us Quakers, because I bid them tremble at the word of the Lord. This was in the year 1650." "It was the experience of loving others, and feeling like children of God, which led Quakers to do certain things and made it impossible to do others. It was largely the genius of George Fox that kept the organization simple and flexible, so that it could continue to express the message of Quakerism; but made it firm enough to remain a 'Society,' and not just a collection of individuals, each following his own light." ~Builders of the Quaker Road, Caroline Nicholson Jacob Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the parent community at Sidwell Friends School.
