Sunday - September 21, 2014 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements NEWS FROM THE NURSE UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE NEWSLETTER NEXT-TO-NEW SALE: ONLY 7 COLLECTION DAYS LEFT! HELP IS NEEDED AT THE FOX DEN ON THE WISCONSIN AVENUE CAMPUS FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE Events AUCTION COMMITTEE MEETINGS: SEPT 23 AND SEPT 29 GAMETIME!: GIRLS' VARSITY TENNIS PCW FALL SPEAKER: SUSAN CAIN, OCT 7 COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY OCT 11: GLEANING AT MILLER FARMS Other QUAKER QUOTES News Around the School US NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, Back-to-School night was an invigorating evening! It was wonderful to have you all here in the Upper School. Teachers were excited about the opportunity to share with you what our students will be learning this year. I realize you only had a few minutes to see your child’s advisor on Back-to-School night, but please know that the advisor is an important resource for you. You can contact your child’s advisor with any question, big or small. Advisors are happy to help you. Upper School students spent this past Wednesday’s Collection time participating in our annual Club Fair. It was a festive afternoon with perfect weather. The Jazz Ensemble performed, and students had the chance to meet representatives from all of our student clubs. There are dozens of different clubs that focus on many different activities and interests, ranging from the Chess Club to Model UN. Please ask your students about the clubs they signed up for and encourage them to be active and get involved. Clubs offer students the chance to explore interests outside the academic program and provide opportunities to form new friendships. And finally, a few reminders: * If your child is unable to attend school due to illness or a scheduled medical/dental appointment, please contact Susannah Parker at parkers@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8160. * If your child has a serious illness or injury, please also notify our school nurse, Jasmin Whitfield, at whitfieldj@sidwell.edu. I hope you enjoyed a relaxing weekend. With warm regards, Mamadou Guèeye Interim Principal Important Dates: September 22, 7:45--8:45 a.m.: 12th Grade Parent Coffee with College Counseling, Choral Room September 29: 9th Grade Elections October 2, 7:45--8:45 a.m.: 10th Grade Parent Conversation with US Administration, Choral Room October 6-7: Senior College Day--no senior classes October 7, 7:00--9:00 p.m.: College Counseling Financial Aid Meeting, RLS Meeting Room October 9, 7:45--8:45 a.m.: 9th Grade Parent Conversation with US Administration, Choral Room October 9, 9:35--10:15 a.m.: Meeting for Worship with Parents, RLS Meeting Room October 10-12: One Acts, Rosenberg Theater (Performance times on School Calendar) Announcements NEWS FROM THE NURSE News from the Nurse: Why is Breakfast so Important? How many times have we heard, “Breakfast--it’s the most important meal of the day?” Well, that’s because it is. Skipping breakfast is like attempting to drive your car on an empty tank. You can try it but you won’t get very far. Breakfast is the fuel that gets us going in the morning, helps us and our children to concentrate and fully participate in a stimulating conversation, provides us with one of the most important nutrients--iron--and will more than likely provide us with the energy needed to participate in physical activities. So it’s really important that we take the time to fuel our children’s bodies before we send them off to school. Any breakfast is better than no breakfast, but try to stay away from sweets (doughnuts, pastries). The key to a well-balanced breakfast is ‘variety’: grains, protein, fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese and yogurt. Here are some helpful traditional breakfast ideas: Eggs French toast, waffles, or pancakes--try whole wheat or, better yet, whole grain Cold cereal and milk Hot cereal with dried fruit Whole-grain toast, bagel, or English muffin Yogurt with fruit Fruit smoothies (the real kind, not that syrupy stuff) Some might think it strange, but other yummy ideas: Banana dog: peanut butter (obviously for those who do not have a “nut allergy"), a banana, and raisins in a whole-grain bun Breakfast taco: shredded cheese on a tortilla, folded in half and microwaved, then topped with salsa Country cottage cheese: apple butter mixed with cottage cheese Fruit and cream cheese sandwich: use with strawberries or other fresh fruit Sandwich: grilled cheese, or another favorite Leftovers: They’re a great source for all of your proteins and minerals and are not just for dinner anymore. The following ideas are great for a midmorning snack or even if you find yourself in a hurry. Here are some quick breakfast ideas for on the go: Single servings of whole-grain, low-sugar cereal Yogurt Fresh fruit Whole-grain muffin Trail mix of pretzels, dried fruits, crackers, and dry cereals UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE NEWSLETTER The September edition of the Upper School Community Service Newsletter is now available on the SFS website. The time commitment is two to three days a week leading up to the Sale. Do you have a truck or large SUV? We are seeking volunteers to help pick up local furniture donations. Co-Chairs Melvin Cauthen, Vanessa Johnson, and Evelyn Nicholas GAMETIME!: GIRLS' VARSITY TENNIS This week’s featured Gametime! team is Girls' Varsity Tennis taking on the Stone Ridge ‘Gators at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 26. At 3:30, we’ll have a pregame party for tennis fans of all ages in the Class of 1960 Garden behind Zartman House. Please remember that in tennis matches, spectators cheer after the point, not during the play. Spectators are encouraged to share their photos of the game by tagging @SidwellFriends with #GoQuakers or by e-mail (webbk@sidwell.edu). One lucky photographer will win Sidwell Friends swag! Congratulations to Stephanie Everett ’15 for last week’s winning photo! Mark your calendars: The next featured game is Boys' Varsity Soccer v. Potomac School on October 2 at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to check out some recent sports photos including preseason, boys soccer, field hockey, and golf. Go Quakers! PCW FALL SPEAKER: SUSAN CAIN, OCT 7 To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Parents Council of Washington (PCW) invites all SFS parents to attend a very special Fall Speaker Program featuring Susan Cain, author of The New York Times bestseller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. This free event will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Holton-Arms and will also feature cuisine from several renowned local chefs, including Jose Andres, Nora Pouillon, Robert Wiedmeier, and John Snedden. Please see the flyer for details. PCW is a nonprofit organization fostering communication among parents, students, and schools within the greater Washington, D.C., independent school community. Please visit the PCW website or click here for more information. COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY OCT 11: GLEANING AT MILLER FARMS Join the Upper School Community Service Committee for a morning of gleaning at Miller Farms, 10140 Piscataway Rd., Clinton, MD 20735. This is a great way to get out, enjoy some fresh air, good food (there is a bakery with fresh donuts, baked goods, and ice cream, as well as a farm market and barbecue stand) and fellowship. We will be gathering at the parking lot of Miller Farms at 8:30 a.m. and heading to a nearby field to pick crops for a few hours before heading back to the farm store and then back to town. We are often joining other groups of people from the D.C. area, so this is a great way to connect with others and share stories as we pick the foods that will make their way to those in need in our community. Please RSVP to Matt Fraidin, mifraidin@yahoo.com. Other QUAKER QUOTES "The meetings of early Quakers were frequently disrupted by angry mobs, their meetinghouses were vandalized and burned, and they were themselves subjected to imprisonment and cruel treatment by officials of the state. Such persecution continued until 1689 and the so-called Glorious Revolution, when a Toleration Act was adopted that gave legal sanction to the principle of religious liberty...Yet, like the early Christian church, the Quaker movement gained more adherents despite--or because of--the persecution. Some historians claim that the Quakers constituted ten percent of the British population by the end of the seventeenth century." --Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the parent community at Sidwell Friends School. Suggestions and questions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com. US News First GameTime! Celebration was a hit Parents and students from all levels of the School came out to support the Quakers. LS News "I think everybody, once in a while, should have a mud bath." The Lower School welcomed author, poet, and teacher Kathi Appelt, who was in town for the National Book Festival. An accomplished author, Kathi has written many works from picture books to chapter books. Dovie Thomason, a Native American storyteller, captivated Lower School students at assembly on Friday. Dovie shared her heritage and told four stories that explored nature, human emotions, and relationships. Upper School Weekly E-Newsletter Submissions How to Submit an Article to the E-Newsletter.
