Arts Guild is a student-run, informal “open mic” night that is open to any and all students who wish to perform. Arts Guild takes place the last Friday of every month from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Please encourage your children to participate! Parents are also welcome to attend. Student actors have been rehearsing for our annual One Acts Festival, which will be held October 10--12 and will feature the work of playwright Don Nigro (Animal Tales: Eight Short Animal Plays). The performances will take place in the 77-seat Scott Weathers Rosenberg '06 Theater. Please reserve your tickets now! www.sidwell.edu/boxoffice I hope you read the message included in last week’s e-newsletter by Jasmin Whitfield, our school nurse, about the importance of breakfast. Sidwell Friends is now offering a light breakfast of fruit and granola for Upper School students weekdays in the dining hall from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. We e-mailed students last week to let them know these breakfast foods were available for them. Please remind your children to grab a quick bite in the dining hall before heading off to class in the morning. And finally, a correction for last week’s reminder about notifying the school when your child is absent: please e-mail USAttendance@sidwell.edu rather than notifying Susannah Parker. GAMETIME!: BOYS' VARSITY SOCCER This week's featured team is Boys' Varsity Soccer taking on league rival Potomac on Thursday, October 2, at 4:30 p.m. At 4:00, we'll have a pregame party for soccer fans of all ages in the Class of 1960 Garden behind Zartman House. Join the photo challenge! Spectators are encouraged to share their photos of the game by tagging @SidwellFriends with #goquakers or by e-mailing webbk@sidwell.edu. PCW FALL SPEAKER: SUSAN CAIN, OCT 7 To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Parents Council of Washington (PCW) invites all SFS parents to attend a very special Fall Speaker Program featuring Susan Cain, author of The New York Times bestseller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. This free event will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Holton-Arms and will also feature cuisine from several renowned local chefs, including Jose Andres, Nora Pouillon, Robert Wiedmeier, and John Snedden. Please see the flyer for details. PCW is a nonprofit organization fostering communication among parents, students, and schools within the greater Washington, D.C., independent school community. Please visit the PCW website or click here for more information. COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY OCT 11: GLEANING AT MILLER FARMS Join the Upper School Community Service Committee for a morning of gleaning at Miller Farms, 10140 Piscataway Rd., Clinton, MD 20735. This is a great way to get out, enjoy some fresh air, good food (there is a bakery with fresh donuts, baked goods, and ice cream, as well as a farm market and barbecue stand) and fellowship. We will be gathering at the parking lot of Miller Farms at 8:30 a.m. and heading to a nearby field to pick crops for a few hours before heading back to the farm store and then back to town. We are often joining other groups of people from the D.C. area, so this is a great way to connect with others and share stories as we pick the foods that will make their way to those in need in our community. Please RSVP to Matt Fraidin, mifraidin@yahoo.com. QUALITY OF COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE The Quality of Community Life Committee and your Grade Representatives warmly invite you to a parent peer group meeting the evening of Homecoming on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 8:30 p.m. (or as soon as you drop off your student at the dance) in the Arts Center. Refreshments will be served, then parents will break out into grade level groups of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. We'll have two trained facilitators present for each grade; please join us in a supportive atmosphere for a discussion on a range of topics that impact us and our students. Other QUAKER QUOTES "The combination of persecution and expansion yielded several important consequences. First, Quakers' sense of themselves as a distinct people with a divine mission became stronger. Their refusal to take oaths under any circumstances, to serve in the army, to take off their hats to persons in authority, to use formal speech, and to dress like the 'world's people' all date from this period. Unlike other dissenters, they insisted on holding their meetings in public in spite of persecution, and this began earning their reputation for scrupulous honesty. Second, the early Friends were more than willing to engage in religious controversy and to defend their basic beliefs. ... Both Margaret Fell and George Fox wrote pamphlets defending a woman's right to preach and prophesy. Third, the early Friends realized that their movement required at least some kind of institutional structure...thus was initiated the bottom-up system of monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings." ---Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism at Sidwell Friends School. Suggestions and questions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com). US News One for the History Books His successful path from the classroom to Zartman House to another Quaker school and back shows that with Bryan Garman, history bears repeating. Living with a legend Poet and Quaker Carol Merrill shares about life with artist Georgia O’Keeffe Stick with it: Nate Franks '03, Olympic field hockey coach, encourages girls and boys alike to pursue the sport From Sidwell Friends to Princeton to more than 60 countries around the world, field hockey scores a great life for this alumnus. MS News Middle School students are treated to a music lesson on tin pans! The Middle School students could hardly sit still at Friday’s assembly that featured the Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra (PVYSO).
