No family is immune from the tragedy of domestic violence, including mine.

Six years ago, my cousin Cathy was shot and killed by her estranged boyfriend, and that’s just one story.

Today, I hope you’ll join me as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Passed by Congress in 1994, VAWA put in place strong protections against domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.

Here in Maryland, we've driven down violence against women and children to new lows and – in addition to VAWA – we’ve secured new protections for domestic violence victims. We’ve taken guns away from abusers, and ensured victims have the protections and support they need to move on with their lives.

But we cannot rest until every Maryland family is safe from violence and fear.
