Beau, Please save the evening of Thursday, October 23 (invite to follow soon). That night we will be honoring, at our black tie gala at the US Institute of Peace: - James Foley, the American journalist publicly executed by ISIS in Syria, and nominated by President Bill Clinton, will receive the 2014 Oxi Day Award. His parents, Diane and John Foley, accompanied by James’ brothers and sister, will receive the award. - The "soul of Ukraine's revolution," one of the 10 recipients of the 2014 Secretary of State’s Women of Courage Award, and one of Forbes' 10 most influential women in the world, Ruslana Lyzhychko will receive the 2014 Battle of Crete Award; - Shimon Peres will receive our 2014 Metropolitan Chrysostomos Award (via video); Others in attendance will include: - Former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO global operations Admiral James Stavridis (who will delivery the keynote address at our National WWII Memorial ceremony; - Stavros Niarchos Foundation Director and Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos (a presenter at the banquet); - George Logothetis who will deliver the gala’s keynote address on the subject of “philotimo"; - other prominent national Greek-American leaders including Jim Chanos, George Marcus, Father Alexander Karloutsos, among others As you’ll recall, the Oxi Day and Battle of Crete awards recognize those who today show the David vs. Goliath courage that was shown by the people of Greece during WWII and during the Holocaust. You will remember that “Oxi” is the Greek word for “No” and is the one word answer the Prime Minister of Greece gave in 1941 to the Axis Forces envoy request at 3 am that Greece surrender. We hope you can help us remember, honor and encourage David vs. Goliath courage for freedom and democracy on October 23. Sincerely, Andy Manatos and Mike Manatos Washington Oxi Day Foundation 1100 New Hampshire Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20037 Mike@OxiDayFoundation.org P: 202-393-0091 (direct) C: 202-441-3979 www.OxiDayFoundation.org
