Greetings from our students and faculty! Our mission and results derive from a strong community that expands beyond the “school” building. Thank you for your part in the success of our academic and spiritual mission over the past 17 years. Now, donors, partners, and alumni often cross paths at events. We are so proud of Luis who delivered the keynote speech at a Don Bosco event. The tight partnership between Don Bosco and San Miguel results in many success stories such as Luis’s. Mrs. Soto supports both schools and is always so pleased to connect with alumni and to spread the word about our mission. Luis (San Miguel Class of 2012), graduated from Don Bosco with honors, is enrolled at the University of Maryland, and was selected to speak on behalf of the entire Don Bosco student body. Each year, we send 30 well-prepared students to the very best Catholic and independent college preparatory schools in the area. We are very proud of our alumni who continue the tradition of a 100% high school graduation rate, while the public school system continues to fail their peers. As a member of our community, please consider supporting San Miguel in this season of giving. Gratefully, Don Mullikin President Miguel Men Go Camping! All 93 students embarked on a three-day, two-night annual camping trip to Patapsco State Park. While our 8th graders are seasoned campers, for many of our 6th graders it was their first time camping and being away from home for that length of time. It was a packed three days, complete with pitching tents, going on hikes, competing in team-building challenges, creating art pieces, playing board games, attempting frisbee golf, and making s'mores. We had more than half of our faculty and staff stay overnight with the students, and our parents worked tirelessly to feed more than 100 people each day. It was a group effort by all, and that's what made this trip a huge success. In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, San Miguel holds an annual Career Day, inviting in a wide range of professionals to come and speak to our students about their careers. This year, seven individuals took time out of their busy schedules to give presentations: * Reggie Govan (lawyer) * Laurance Alvarado (entrepreneur and CEO) * Andrew Farrelly (consultant and CEO) * Caleb Garcia (Maryland Park Police) * Janet St. Amand (lawyer) * John Matos (civil engineer) * Rehka Patricio (marketing director) We are thankful that our speakers could share their wisdom and experiences with our students. It was a day of inquiry, exploration, and learning for our students – a day of possibilities! Lasallian Youth Club Holds Thanksgiving Food Drive San Miguel School’s Lasallian Youth Club will be hosting a food drive from Monday, November 5th–Friday, November 9th. They will be donating canned/bagged goods to the Capital Area Food Bank, which helps around 540,000 DMV residents each year get access to good, healthy food. What can you donate? * Canned or Dry Beans * Peanut Butter * Canned Vegetables (low sodium, no salt added) * Grains (brown & white rice, pasta, macaroni & cheese) * Hot and Cold Cereal (oatmeal, cheerios, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran) * Canned Tuna, Salmon, or Chicken * Healthy snacks (raisins, granola bars) * Canned Fruits (in light syrup or its own juices) * 100% Juice (all sizes, including juice boxes) * The Capital Area Food Bank's Amazon Wishlist can also be found here (https://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/25MGSH06XN7IJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_ws_keXaBbDY69M1B) . Stop by San Miguel anytime between November 5th and November 9th to drop off your items! Scenes Around the School Students happily search for a book at our Annual Book Fair, held in September. Thanks to the generous support from the Kennedy Guild–a local chapter of Christ Child Society DC–each student was able to pick out one book for himself. Our 8th graders took a field trip to the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America. They heard from a panel of current students, professors, and librarians, and they even participated in a mock trial! A student checks the temperature of his solar cooker. After researching the best design methods and implementing them into their construction, all students put their solar cookers to the test. One cooker reached a temperature of 55° Celsius or 131° Fahrenheit! Students hold the flag of El Salvador–their country of origin–during the Hispanic Heritage mass and celebration. All of our families helped to make food and displays that represent and celebrate their heritage. We have a limited number of tickets left! Join Friends of San Miguel tonight for an evening of good company, networking, and–of course–delicious, homemade Italian food. * Today, November 1, 2018, 6–8pm * Via Umbria (https://viaumbria.com/) , 1525 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20007 * Ticket cost: $40 * Click here (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/italian-cooking-with-san-miguel-school-tickets-51471185702) to purchase tickets and learn more Keep our mission alive!
