President Donald Trump on Saturday said that a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue earlier in the day has proved to be "far more devastating" than local officials predicted.

"Events in Pittsburgh are far more devastating than originally thought," the president tweeted. "Spoke with Mayor and Governor to inform them that the Federal Government has been, and will be, with them all the way. I will speak to the media shortly and make further statement at Future Farmers of America."

Trump echoed those statements at a later news conference at Joint Base Andrews, calling out "hate" in the country and adding that "something has to be done" about violence perpetrated by a "madman" or "wacko," advocating for the death penalty for such crimes and suggesting that armed guards could have mitigated the extent of the violence.

Pittsburgh-area law enforcement on Saturday responded to an active shooter situation at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in the city's residential Squirrel Hill neighborhood, apprehending a suspect after "multiple casualties" were reported, including three police officers shot. An official death toll has not been released.
