The economy added 250,000 jobs in October, the Labor Department reported today, up from 118,000 in September.

Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 3.1 percent over the previous year, the biggest jump since 2009. In September, they were up 2.8 percent. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted the creation of 190,000 jobs, an increase in over-the-year hourly earnings of 3 percent and an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent.
