Republican Sen. Ted Cruz locked in a second term Tuesday night after defeating Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, shutting down Democrats' most aggressive attempt in decades to win a statewide office in Texas.

Polling of the Texas Senate race tightened over the summer, but Cruz held leads in the mid-single digits or higher in most public, independent surveys of the campaign.
