Enjoy stories of generosity in Delaware. https://delcf.org Dear Friends, Lately, in other parts of the country, donor advised funds have come under scrutiny and criticism as "black boxes" for charitable dollars -- accounts where philanthropists leave money to grow instead of deploying it to address community needs (see this Oct. 3 article Bloomberg article (https://apple.news/Ak6XIG152R4egkAuGVq8CnQ) ). I want to assure you that in Delaware, this is not the case. Data shows that the DCF does a very good job of ensuring that our DAFs are supporting the community as intended. At the DCF, donor advised funds represent about 30 percent of our total assets. Over the last four years, those funds have averaged just over an 8 percent payout rate -- well above the required 5 percent payout for private foundations. In the rare case that a fund is inactive for two or more years, DCF staff reaches out to the donors to come up with revised grantmaking plan s. Also, in the rare case that a fund does not make a grant for more than three years and a donor is not available, the DCF will issue a grant that aligns with the donor’s previously stated wishes. Rest assured: Your community foundation is ensuring that the charitable dollars we steward are working hard for Delaware. If you'd like to discuss how the DCF is investing in Delaware, please reach out to me at 302.504.5228. Riverworks Fundhttps://www.delcf.org/2018/10/riverview-works-fund-born-of-an-iconic-company-new-dcf-charitable-fund-will-benefit-delaware-for-generations/ Creating Future Opportunity While Honoring the Past Rod and Gina Ward recently established the Riverview Works Fund, a donor advised fund, through a gift of stock from The Speakman Company. The fund honors all those who were part of The Speakman Company and their devotion to the state and the City of Wilmington in particular. The Wards will work with the DCF to develop a process to make grants from the Riverview Works Fund to organizations primarily in the education and wellness sectors. Arsht-Cannon Fund Executive Director Honored On Oct. 9, the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Delaware (NAMI Delaware) (http://www.namidelaware.org/) presented the Simon & Jill Shute Advocacy Award to Dr. Christine Cannon, executive director of the Arsht-Cannon Fund (http://arshtcannonfund.org/) at the DCF. Dr. Cannon is a tireless advocate, working to increase educational opportunities and access to healthcare for Hispanic families in Delaware. Since it first began awarding grants in 2004, the Arsht-Cannon Fund has invested nearly $9 million in Delaware's Latino community. That includes funding many programs to increase bilingual, culturally relevant care (screening, diagnosis, education and treatment) for Latinos affected by chronic stress, mental or behavioral disorders or other major health common conditions that reduce the quality and length of life. Congratulations, Chris, and thank you for your work!
