EJC BOOK DISCUSSION, "WE GON' BE ALRIGHT": MARCH 7 PARENTS COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON FORUM: MARCH 8 US PARENTS AND MEETING FOR WORSHIP: MARCH 9 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School US NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, Our juniors breathed a deep sigh of relief on Monday when they submitted their US history research papers! As you may know, they began working on these projects back in October, so their papers are the culmination of many months of hard work. I hope your children will share their finished products with you! Meanwhile, many of our 9th and 10th graders have begun working on research papers for their own history classes. Please know that our history teachers are working closely with students during each step of the research and writing process. Teachers and the school librarian, Matt Geeza, are available to assist students. Encourage your children to seek help if they run into any stumbling blocks. As students consider course options for next year, they might find themselves with questions, which they should direct to their advisors and current teachers. Questions that advisors and teachers are unable to answer may be posed to Min Kim, our assistant principal and academic dean, who is available to advise students and parents alike. You can contact Min at kimm@sidwell.edu. All course selections will be entered through Educator Online, which is accessible through the Student Portal on the School website. After submitting their choices electronically, students must print out the signature page, have a parent or guardian sign it, and turn it in to their advisor by March 13. Four-year plans, which students will be filling out with the help of their advisors, are also due by March 13. Finally, please remember to reserve your tickets for Rent, which is scheduled for March 17–19. You can book them here. Warmly, Mamadou Upper School Principal Sidwell Friends School Announcements CALLING ALL SENIOR PARENTS The Senior Celebration (one of several social events for the senior class this spring) is the traditional, on-campus, Parents Association-sponsored evening in honor of our almost-graduates, complete with food, fun, and parent-provided entertainment! The event will include silly skits, songs, and slide shows. All parents get to be onstage! The event will take place on Saturday, June 3, 6:00–9:00 p.m., at the Kogod Arts Center. Please save the date. Thanks very much to everyone who has volunteered to help so far. The teams have been working to put together a general outline for how the evening might proceed. We invite all senior parents to join us for our second grade-wide meeting on Tuesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the US choral room. This is your chance to provide input and make sure you agree with where the teams are heading. Don’t miss the opportunity to help make this a memorable celebration for the entire class. And it is not too late to volunteer—we will definitely need more help! Please reach out if you are interested. Peggy Dotzel and Jackie Roberts Senior Celebration Chairs (margaret.dotzel@verizon.net; jroberts3413@gmail.com) SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR 11TH GRADERS Eleventh graders have received several e-mails about internship opportunities for the upcoming summer. In addition, the Upper School held two optional workshops this past week on resume and cover letter writing. The deadlines for these applications are March 15. If students or parents have any questions about these opportunities, they should contact Robbie Gross at grossr@sidwell.edu. AP EXAM REGISTRATION Advanced Placement exam registration is now available online. Students who plan to take an AP exam at Sidwell Friends School must register online by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15. The cost per exam is $93. Financial aid may be available for eligible students. Please contact Cory Zimmerman in the college counseling office for more information at zimmermanc@sidwell.edu. A confirmation will be delivered to the parent’s e-mail address indicated on the page to verify that the registration process was completed. COMMUNITY SERVICE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT As you know, juniors must complete a minimum of 60 hours of service for an independent, off-campus organization before the start of senior year in order to graduate. For those who still need to complete this requirement, please arrange a time to meet with Ms. Sumka during a free period to discuss which organizations you might want to work with. There are also several online resources that may help. One source is the Upper School “How to Get Started” guide. You can also look at this directory of organizations listed by social issue. The deadline to submit your contract is April 1, 2017. KID POWER SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY We are excited to announce that, once again, the Kid Power Summer Leadership Academy is accepting applications for students who wish to volunteer as camp counselors this summer. Sidwell Friends has a longstanding partnership with Kid Power, and many SFS students have spent their summers working at the camp. You can read about the Leadership Academy here. Volunteering for a minimum of two weeks will complete the community service graduation requirement. However, Kid Power prefers to have the same volunteers throughout the entire summer program so that counselors can form meaningful relationships with campers. The Leadership Academy will run from June 26 to July 28, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To apply, please complete these three forms: 1. The Kid Power summer leadership volunteer form 2. The DCPS volunteer clearance letter (if under 18) 3. The Sidwell Friends community engagement contract Please contact Shoshanna Sumka at sumkas@sidwell.edu if you have any questions. Events APOLLO ORCHESTRA AND SFS CHORUS: TODAY! There will be a fabulous, free orchestral and choral performance in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room today, Sunday, March 5, at 3:00 p.m. Click here for more information about the program and the Apollo Orchestra. EJC BOOK DISCUSSION, "WE GON' BE ALRIGHT": MARCH 7 Don’t miss the first PA Equity, Justice, and Community (EJC) book discussion of 2017: We will read and assess We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation, by Jeff Chang. We will meet at the Lower School Meeting House (5100 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda) on Tuesday, March 7, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. Our conversation, a follow-up to our well-attended fall EJC gathering, will cover a breadth of issues and challenges. Our yearlong theme is “identity,” and we seek a rich diversity of opinions and experiences on this topic. We will be joined by Jen Cort, an educational consultant and former Middle School counselor, and Philip McAdoo, the director of EJC. RSVP here. Please remember to indicate if childcare is needed. If you have questions, please contact MS EJC co-clerks Priya Parikh (priyap4@gmail.com) or Marjan Ehsassi (marjanehsassi@hotmail.com) or US EJC co-clerks Robert Wilson-Black (robwilsonblack@gmail.com) or Mark Faison (mark.faison@outlook.com). PARENTS COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON FORUM: MARCH 8 This year’s Best Practices Forum will take place on Wednesday, March 8, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, which is located at 8804 Postoak Road, Potomac, MD 20854. The topic will be “A Child’s Brain: What Schools Know and How It Impacts Learning, Teaching, and Parenting.” The program is open to all Parents Council of Washington member school parents and educators. Learn more and RSVP here. US PARENTS AND MEETING FOR WORSHIP: MARCH 9 Upper School Parents are invited to join students at Meeting for Worship on Thursday, March 9, at 9:35 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Join us for coffee before meeting in the lobby.
