FILM: Four Swedish Oscar nominations

Did you know that over the years, Swedish film work has won 25 Oscars? This year, Swedish film A man called Ove, is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

On top of that, Swedish cinematographer Linus Sandgren is nominated for Best Picture and Swedish songwriters and produceres Max Martin and Shellback are nominated for Best Song. In other Words, we are crossing our fingers this weekend! The Oscars will take place on Sunday, February 26.

HOCKEY: Swedish Heritage Night - Washington Capitals VS Dallas Stars
Monday, March 6 at Verizon Center at 7:30 PM

OUTREACH PROGRAM 2017: Safe and Sound

The theme for the Embassy of Sweden 2017 outreach program is "Safe and Sound". Exhibitions, concerts, seminars, conferences and social events will highlight Swedish core values which serve as a foundation for our relations with the United States.

Throughout the year we will discuss how to provide safer, more secure - and yet resilient- societies within a global context. We will emphasize the importance of open, free and fair trade, economic empowerment, green economics, climate and sustainability, women, peace and security and the importance of equality for all.

Through our extensive cultural events program we will highlight the importance of music, dance, literature, visual arts and film in creating dialogue and awareness. The theme program is presented in collaboration with MSB, Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.

Exhibitions like Where The Children Sleep by Swedish photographer Magnus Wennman (above) will be on display in House of Sweden from March 18. More soon!

Woodland Sweden
On display until March 5 in House of Sweden

Nature is prevalent everywhere in Sweden and there is a long tradition of using nature’s raw materials in our built environment. Wooden architecture and design is becoming a new Swedish export item. This exhibition shows the rapid development in Swedish innovative contemporary architecture and tells the story about the different aspects of construction work with wood.

Viktigt by Ingegerd Råman
On display until March 5 in House of Sweden

House of Sweden’s own designer Ingegerd Råman tells us about the craftsmanship behind her IKEA collection of glass, ceramic, bamboo and natural fibers. With love of craftsmanship and simplicity at the heart of it all, VIKTIGT pieces do their job in silence. In her own words: ‘’This collection is about craft, it's a project between the craftsmen and the designer. It has lots of energy and looking at the objects now - the things we did - for it represents love."

Gender Equality - We’ve come a long way - haven’t we?
On display until March 5 in House of Sweden

Sweden’s achievements in gender equality are hailed as inspiring examples. Regardless of whether they were made possible by tradition, Swedish culture or legislation, steps have been taken to ensure that women and men have equal opportunities and equal power to shape society and their own lives. Focusing on four sub-goals of gender equality set up by the Swedish government: Equal division of power and influence; Economic equality; Equal distribution of unpaid housework and provision of care and Men's violence against women must stop the exhibition aims to inspire and reflect as well as discuss the changes which have been made and to initiate the changes still needed.

Is a Swedish library and arts studio for the young designed to stimulate their desire for books, music, storytelling and self-expression. A child’s perspective is applied throughout, from the greeting to the interior design and the way books are placed and displayed.
