Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. Last week we celebrated AmeriCorps Week. At JVC Northwest, we believe National Service is an important American value which solves local problems, unites communities and creates a generation of leaders. JV AmeriCorps members are a visible testimony to the power of service and are addressing critical community needs in education, public safety, health, social services, and the environment. JVC Northwest has been an AmeriCorps Direct Grantee since 2010, and this partnership has enabled us to provide service in Northwest communities where the need is greatest by reducing the cost of a JV AmeriCorps member for our partner agencies, as well as decreased barriers toward service by providing a Segal Education Award at the end of the service year, and the potential to postpone student loan payments for our JV AmeriCorps members. Read more here about how you can educate your legislators about the incredible impact of AmeriCorps for the communities we serve and on our JVs and partner agencies. Now, more than ever, it is important to tell the story and impact of National Service. JVC Northwest News Spokane 60th Anniversary Event Thank You An enormous thank you to the over 80 supporters who attended our 60th Anniversary reunion and fundraiser at Gonzaga University on February 24th! Current JV featured in America Magazine Reflecting on being a JV with autism Current Missoula JV, Gus Hardy, shares this incredibly beautiful and moving story of what it’s like for him to commit to a life of service while also living with autism, and how Ignatian Spirituality has played a significant role in his strength and commitment. You can read the article in the March 6 edition of America Magazine, or online here. Gus is also a featured blogger on Ignatian Solidarity Network’s JV Reflects series, here. #JVReflects: Grappling with Impermanence Read current JV Amanda’s most recent blog post “Just because I won’t be around forever doesn’t negate the fact that I am here now. God willing, now will be enough,” Amanda shares. In her most recent blog post, she grapples with the fact that, despite the deep relationships she’s created this year, she’ll be leaving in a few months, and what it feels like to not fully be rooted in one place. Read her reflections on the Ignatian Solidarity Network’s #JVReflects blog, here. AmeriCorps Week: Impact Stories JV AmeriCorps member Tricia Tyson (Yakima, WA '16-17) Tricia serves as the Homeless Outreach Specialist at Yakima Neighborhood Health Services. In honor of AmeriCorps Week, Tricia shared the story of her capacity building project, Depot Job Match: “I created the infrastructure for a sustainable project to hire the most vulnerable homeless in a temporary, transitional employment program in order to lay the groundwork for future employment. I find this project uniquely benefits my clients as they feel a sense of empowerment and increased self-respect as a result of working, improving mental health and overall well-being. Fundamentally, it helps transition clients off the street and into housing by providing them a routine and source of income.” Check out more impact stories on our JVC Northwest AmeriCorps blog! Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Sarah Northwest Earth Institute's new discussion course, "A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World". Living with intention is more important than ever right now, and living a simple life is also an act of resistance to the status quo. Our personal actions matter, especially when we invite others to join us. You can learn more here. Could a required national service program be the key to unifying us across our divisions and addressing some of the most critical social issues within our communities? As demand for National Service exceeds funding, perhaps now is the time to consider service as an American value that can bridge our divides, solve local challenges, and provide valuable experience to the next generation. Roger Cohen poses these questions in "Travel Abroad, in Your Own Country".
