Dear Upper School Parents,

As you are aware, this year’s Prom will be held this Friday May 23 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington DC. We chaperones here are looking forward to it. The chartered busses will begin to leave at 8:30pm, therefore, please drop off your students at the garage by 8:15pm. The busses will return between 2:15am and 2:30am in the morning. If you are concerned with your child driving themselves or being driven home by their peers that late at night, we recommend that parents pick up the students at the end of the long night. Attendance will be taken upon arrival at the hotel and again prior to departure from the hotel at 2am.

The 2014 Prom runs from 815pm until 2am, from when the students board the busses to go to the hotel until they board the busses to return from the hotel. No student will be allowed to leave early without a prior permission from the Dean of Students. No student may leave early without their parent’s physical arrival to the Prom. If you wish your child to leave the Prom prior to 2am, please contact the Dean of Students and Susannah Parker by 4pm this Thursday May 22, so that an official list may be maintained. While some circumstances are unavoidable, we strongly discourage early dismissals as it siphons off the spirit from the entire endeavor.

Finally, we urge parents and students to remain vigilant about what continues to be a dangerous aspect of teen culture: drinking and substance abuse. Please remember that School policy clearly prohibits the use, distribution, or possession of drugs and alcohol on campus and at school-sponsored events. You should familiarize yourself with the relevant passages on pages 9 and 41 in the Parent Student Handbook. Students may not attend an event under the influence of a controlled substance. As we do with all dances, the Breathalyzer will be on site to be used when warranted. The bags holding the change of clothes may also be checked when warranted. The possible penalties for violating these policies include suspension and expulsion. Unfortunately, there have been incidents in the recent past that have resulted in severe disciplinary consequences and I hope that we can work together to avoid such situations this year. I expect, however, that this Prom will be a fun affair and free of incidents.

We give many thanks to Margie Sollee, Monika Rosenfeld, and all the other parent volunteers who have made this great event possible. Please continue to enjoy the traditional preparations for the Prom. Feel free to contact me and to copy my assistant Susannah Parker. Thank you.

Best,

Mr. Woods

Upper School Dean of Students woodsm@sidwell.edu

Susannah Parker parkers@sidwell.edu
