Dear Robert, My first memory of DC is with my mom. We were driving in front of the White House, back in the days when you could drive in front of the White House. I was just a boy and sitting in the back seat. As we drove by, I looked out my window to the left: I saw a man seated in a clear garbage bag reading the newspaper. Having never seen a homeless person before, I said to my mom, "What is that man doing?" She answered, "I think he lives in that garbage bag." Without hesitation, I responded, "Why doesn't the President do something about that?" She paused, struck by the question, and responded regretfully, "I don't know sweety." On this Mother's Day, I reflect on the influence that my mom has had on me and my path to public service. She has devoted her life to serving others: first, she worked in special education helping disabled persons; later, she taught in elementary and high schools (where students loved her); and finally, she committed much of her professional life to serving the senior population, as she led three nonprofit programs. Importantly, she also loved her three sons as much as any mother could. And she gave us the strength and courage to pursue our dreams. Now, decades after my first memory of our city, I am running for DC Council At-Large. I am inspired by my mom and by the many people in DC who are working tirelessly and with compassion each day to address our greatest challenges -- including education reform, affordable housing, job creation and homelessness. As a pro bono attorney, ANC commissioner, and volunteer for years, I believe that I can help and serve others and contribute positively to our city on the council. I also have deep faith that, together, we as a people have tremendous potential to address these serious issues and effect positive change in our communities. On this Mother's Day, then, let us thank our mothers for all they have done and all they have given us, and let us recommit ourselves to their example of living with compassion and care for others.
