Assembly: Through the Eyes of a Friend – a Story of Anne Frank A reminder that CTPs (standardized tests) will be held next week on Tuesday, February 3 through Thursday, February 5 in the mornings. Please be sure that your child is on time to school each day – latecomers will have to make up the first section of the test later in the week. A good night’s sleep and nutritious breakfast are also helpful! Students are asked to fully charge their laptops on the Monday through Wednesday evenings at home and to be sure to bring them to school for the testing. We have a very limited number of loaners. For more practice with the online testing, one is welcome to go to CTP Online website and do a Demo Test without having to login. Calculators are optional for the second portion of Math on Thursday morning and students are welcome to bring one to the test. Phone calculators are prohibited and teachers are not a source for calculators for the test. Many ask how to prepare for optimum performance on these tests. Answering questions slowly and thoughtfully is the best measure of what a student knows. “Slow and steady wins the race.” We are seeing cases of the flu in the Middle School. A letter from Nurse Jasmin with reminders is attached. A reminder from the IT staff: student laptops must stay in their cases at all times! This will help protect the laptop from damages. 8th grade parents: a reminder of the important meeting with Upper School administrators next Monday evening, February 2 at 7 pm in the RL Smith Meeting Room! This is the introduction to the Upper School academic program. Conversations with Sally will begin soon! These informal grade-level discussions will be held in the Rosenberg Theater in the Arts Center at 8:00 am on the following dates: 5th grade: February 11; 6th grade: February 25; 7th grade: February 23; and 8th grade: March 4. Hope to see you there! Announcements MEET BRYAN GARMAN - TUES, FEB 10, 7pm As promised, Middle School parents have another opportunity to meet Head of School Bryan Garman on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. RSVP to events@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8110. If you couldn’t make the morning meeting in January or simply have more questions, please come. As Bryan said in his interview with Judy Woodruff, “I learned who I wanted to be in room 212” of the Harrison Upper School Building, so there is a theme to all of the welcome events: “the Room 212 tour.” Please visit Room 212 Tour to learn more about the tour and event details. RE-ENROLLMENT PROCESSING PERIOD: FEB 2-20 The Re-Enrollment Processing Period for 2015-16 will run from February 2 to February 20. The link to your child’s online contract will be available on the Parent Portal beginning on February 2. The contract must be submitted by Friday, February 20, 2015. Please contact Valerie Foster in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid with any questions at 202.537.8111. The second Math meet of the year will be held next Wednesday, February 4, at St. Patrick's. If your child is interested in attending, he or she needs to sign up with his or her math teacher as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots are given first-come, first-serve. While 7th and 8th graders are given priority, there are often spots for 6th graders, so they should definitely sign up if they are interested. If your child is interested and has not turned in a permission form already this year, he or she needs to get one from his or her math teacher and have it signed and returned in order to be eligible for the meet. We will leave Sidwell Friends by bus before the end of school at 2:15 pm, and return between 4 pm and 4:15 pm. At the math meet, students are given six fun and challenging math problems to solve on their own alongside students from other area private schools. An afterschool snack is provided 8TH GRADE PARENTS: WANT TO HEAR FROM YOUR PEERS ABOUT 9TH GRADE? Attend the 8th grade parent peer group this Wednesday, January 28, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in the Middle School Library. A panel of 8th grade parents with children already in Upper School will provide their insights, wisdom and lessons learned from their previous experiences in Upper School with their older children. A Q&A period will follow. This will be a great companion event to the Upper School curriculum meeting for 8th grade parents on February 2. Whether you’ve never had a child in the Upper School, or you are a seasoned Upper School veteran, you won’t want to miss this valuable discussion! Rising parents will learn important information, and veteran parents will gain some insights as well. To get a sense of the amount of refreshments we need to order, please RSVP to Ira Apfel. GAMETIME! DANCE: FEB 6 The Upper School Dance Ensemble meets as a PE Class and our last winter GAMETIME! event is a celebration of our dancers and their parents. The Athletics Committee will host a pre-performance reception in the lobby of the Mary Ellen Caplin Theater on Friday, February 6 at 6:30pm prior to the Dance performance at 7:00pm. As some of you experienced at Artrageous, this is a talented and entertaining group of girls and boys. Give these athletes the credit they deserve! We recognize that the 7/8 dance starts at 7:30pm; please encourage your students to come to the beginning perhaps for some inspiration. Parents, you are welcome to join us when you drop off students for the dance. FRIEND TO FRIEND (FORMERLY EVENTS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS) “CELEBRATE DC” Auction Donation Deadline is February 1 This is a friendly reminder that the auction donation deadline is quickly approaching on Sunday, February 1, 2015. Please contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu with any questions. Please remember that 100% of the net auction proceeds benefit financial aid at Sidwell Friends School. Thank you for your support! Register Today for Out and About with Faculty and Friends! Please join us for the first Out & About with Faculty and Friends discussion of the year - Revolution Radio: African Protest Music from Soweto to Dakar with Shields Sundberg on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. at Hill and Dale Record Store in Georgetown. Shields will explore the culture of protest music in South Africa in the 1970s as well as the birth of African hip hop. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple and all net proceeds benefit student scholarships at Sidwell Friends. Spacing is limited - register online today. To learn more about the other faculty-led discussions taking place this spring, please view the 2015 schedule. Many thanks for your support! We are Seeking Volunteers to Fill Middle School Positions for Next Year: If you enjoy community building and would like to make an important contribution to the School and your child's experience at Sidwell, please volunteer as a vice-clerk or grade representative. We are looking to fill positions in all grades in the Middle School. If you are interested in serving, would like to suggest someone else, or simply would like more information, please e-mail Lisa Gunty, MS nominating clerk, at lgunty@aol.com; Renee Fried, MS co-vice clerk, at reneefriedzone@gmail.com, or Beth Zeugin, MS co-vice clerk, at bczeugin@comcast.net. Thank you! It feels great to get involved and help out at SFS. Other SFS @ WASHINGTON WIZARDS - LOGISTICS FOR TICKET HOLDERS Wizards Logistics.pdfFor the 400 SFS community members attending the Washington Wizards v. Brooklyn Nets game on Saturday, February 7, attached is key logistical information. The doors will open for us from 5:15-5:45pm and we will be able to go down near the court to watch player warm ups. Please enter the Verizon Center through the 6th Street entrance which is right past the Greene Turtle on the corner of 6th and F. If you arrive after 5:45pm, you will have to use the main entrance on F Street which opens at 6:00pm and you will not be able to attend the player warm up segment of the evening. Please plan accordingly. To pick up your Wizards-SFS custom T-shirts, look for parents in blue Wizards T-shirts and SFS baseball caps at a table near the 6th street entrance or, for people arriving later, in section 400. See the attached logistics page for more info, including how your student can have a shot at being in the fan tunnels to high five the players as they come onto the court! We will be a very public face for our school at the game. Please wear your SFS and Wizards gear proudly and show your spirit loudly and appropriately! ARTRAGEOUS THANK YOU, INFO AND REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK Thanks to everyone in the community who participated as a volunteer, performer, audience member and craftsperson at Artrageous last Sunday. It was fun because of all of you. Your Middle School artists are important links between our youngest talent and the Upper School master artists. The dozens of silhouettes produced by the Quaker Life volunteers can be found on Flickr at http://bit.ly/artrageous2015; the Artistree will remain up for a week in the Caplin theater lobby if you want to have another look at our community creation, and two canvases created at Artrageous were provided to the auction. The Artrageous 2015 cherry blossom T-shirts are on sale now in the Fox Den for all who want to show their support for the arts or simply show their desire for an early spring. A few people went home without their belongings, and we ask that you check to make sure the coat, hat, and mittens your child is wearing are indeed theirs. We also ask that you provide us with your feedback. What did you like best? What didn’t work for you? Stay tuned for a post-Artrageous February gathering on campus to discuss these questions and start planning for next year. Or, while the event is still fresh in your mind, please let us know what you think. Email your suggestions to Jane Legg, Arts Committee Co-Clerk and MS parent at janelegg@yahoo.com or Kathi Webb, director of parent relations, at webbk@sidwell.edu. QUAKER SUMMER CAMPS IN BALTIMORE YEARLY MEETING AREA Looking for a Friendly camping adventure? Catoctin, Opequon, and Shiloh, three local Quaker-affiliated summer camps, offer 1, 2 & 4 week residential sessions for campers aged 9-14, available between June 27 and August 9. Activities include: hiking, canoeing, climbing, art, music, nature, and more in a healthy, supportive, affordable, Friendly community open to all. Registration for new campers begins February 1. Please see the website for more information and to apply online! bymcamps.org or call 717.481.4870 for more information! COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER A Wider Circle: February 1 & February 15 - 5th and 6th grade service club at A Wider Circle: ongoing project to manage the Kids' Corner. Contact Dana.Milbank@washpost.com for additional information. Ongoing Toiletries Collection - Bins in Lobby for AWC Linen Drive - Got fleece? Actually, any old linen will do! Please bring bed linens, towels, comforters or blankets to Middle School ASAP. Usable items will find an immediate home with humans at A Wider Circle. Shabby fleece blankets and towels will head to our furry friends at Washington Animal Rescue League. Our “Paws and Claws” Minimester group can use even badly tattered blankets in March to make toys for the cuties in cages. Collection bins are inside the M.S. lobby and in the 5th grade hallway. See Susanne Saunders or Michael Salmon if you have questions. Used soccer cleat collection for Tanzania Jacob Walters, an 8th grader on Team Sky, is collecting used soccer cleats for Kunduchi School, near Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Kunduchi is a financially-strapped government-run school with 1,500 students of lower and middle school age, in classes of 100. Like many Tanzanians, the students are passionate about soccer. Football Action, a UK-based charity, is working to build a soccer field at the school, but few of the children have proper footwear. Jacob has previously collected about 30 pairs of used cleats, which a volunteer for Football Action transported to Tanzania (see photo below). However, the demand is still very high, hence this new appeal. There will be a box for collection of cleats in the Middle School lobby through February 6. All sizes are welcome! Contact MS Community Service Co-clerks Eva Xanthos at eva.xanthos@verizon.net or Lisa Arrington at arringtonlp@hotmail.com or your Grade Reps for volunteer opportunities. QUAKER QUOTE "We will be able to emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man's inhumanity to man into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom and justice. This is what stands ahead. We've made progress, and it is great progress that we must make if we are to fulfill the dreams of our democracy, the dreams of Christianity, the dreams of the great religions of the world....let us continue, my friends, going on and on toward that great city where all men live together as brothers in respected dignity and worth of all human personality. This will be a great day, a day, figuratively speaking, when the 'morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy.'" - from Martin Luther King's address to the annual gathering of Quakers, summer 1958 To read the full address, visit http://www.thekingcenter.org/archive/document/friends-journal-quaker-weekly#. Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the SFS community. Suggestions and questions may be addressed to Cynthia Ritchie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com.
