News Around the School LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, Upper School students began second semester this week, with many students beginning new arts classes and seniors beginning new semester courses in English and history. There has been great energy in the building, with students eagerly jumping back into their classwork after the exam period. The GLSBT (Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Bisexual, Transgender) Club held its annual dance, “The Stage Rave,” on Friday evening, to great success. Students in the club have also prepared a thoughtful program for next week called Love Week. During Love Week, the students will host a series of lunchtime presentations and activities that explore a range of GLSBT issues. We have many other school events on the horizon-- various sporting events, the Winter Dance Ensemble Performance, and the Black Student Union (BSU) Show, to name a few. I look forward to seeing many of you at these upcoming events. Please note that the Athletic Hotline is no longer in use. ADVERTISE IN THE 2015 AUCTION CATALOG Interested in showcasing your business or organization in the Sidwell Friends Auction catalog? Please read carefully: ENTRY: Eager fans, doors will open for us from 5:15-5:45 p.m., and we will be able to go down near the court to watch player warm-ups. Please enter through the 6th Street entrance, which is right past the Greene Turtle on the corner of 6th and F. If you arrive after 5:45 p.m., you will have to use the main entrance (which opens at 6:00 p.m.) on F Street, and you will not be able to attend the player warm-up segment of the evening. Please plan accordingly. WATCH WARM-UPS: Plan to be in the very first rows of the lower level seating bowl to watch players warm up between 5:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. This is where you will realize just how big and quick these guys are! Once warm-ups are over, you’ll be free to explore the Verizon Center as you head to your ticketed seats for the game. T-SHIRTS: Look for Athletics Committee parents in blue Wizards T-shirts and SFS baseball caps at a table near the 6th Street entrance or, for people arriving later, in Section 400. We will have 400 shirts and appreciate that many of you provided us with size information. With a group this large, we can’t guarantee you’ll get the size you requested, but there will be a shirt for everyone, and since we’re all sitting together, perhaps you can trade to get a better fit. The smallest size offered is a youth medium. FAN TUNNEL: We can accommodate 50 fans in the Wizards tunnel and 50 in the Nets tunnel to high-five the players as they come onto the court for the game (approximately 6:30 p.m.). The Athletics Committee will allocate those slots to students on a first-come basis at the Verizon Center. We will hand out paper wristbands they will need to wear so that they can get into the tunnel when called. Please remember that the tunnel will be crowded, your student will be with other students (not with a parent), and so we feel the tunnel will not be the best place for smaller children. There will be other years for them! SEATING: We have most of the tickets in sections 424 and 425 and some in adjacent sections. However, WE DO NOT HAVE ALL THE TICKETS IN THESE SECTIONS. To avoid confusion and be respectful of others, please sit in the seat for which you are ticketed. SPIRIT: As stated before, all 400 of us attending this game represent Sidwell Friends and will be a very public face for our School. Please wear your SFS and Wizards gear proudly and show your spirit appropriately. The guidelines in the Handbook for Parents and Students apply. Other QUAKER QUOTES "We will be able to emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man's inhumanity to man into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom and justice. This is what stands ahead. We've made progress, and it is great progress that we must make if we are to fulfill the dreams of our democracy, the dreams of Christianity, the dreams of the great religions of the world...let us continue, my friends, going on and on toward that great city where all men live together as brothers in respected dignity and worth of all human personality. This will be a great day, a day, figuratively speaking, when the "morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy.'" ---From Martin Luther King Jr.'s address to the annual gathering of Quakers, summer 1958. ?For the full address: http://www.thekingcenter.org/archive/document/friends-journal-quaker-weekly ?Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the SFS community.?
