Good Evening, Welcome to The Evening CSIS—my daily guide to key insights CSIS brings to the events of the day plus HIGHLY RECOMMENDED content from around the world. To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) . ** Hot Launch ------------------------------------------------------------ Today we launched an updated WWW.CSIS.ORG —it’s like flipping the switch from analog to HD. On the new CSIS website it’s easy to register for events, watch events live or on demand and access our latest analysis. And, responsive design makes the new site easily accessible on mobile, tablet, or desktop. Visit the new site (https://www.csis.org/) and let us know what you think. ** Total Chaos ------------------------------------------------------------ A day after violent protests rocked Nairobi's city center, many in Kenya are concerned about what the brutality means for the future of the country, as Vice News’s Christina Goldbaum reports (https://news.vice.com/article/kenya-nairobi-video-police-brutally-beating-protester?utm_source=vicenewstwitter ) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Steve Morrison today published a new commentary "Kenya’s Dangerous, Vague Alchemy—Refugees and Terror (https://www.csis.org/analysis/kenya%E2%80%99s-dangerous-vague-alchemy%E2%80%94refugees-and-terror ) ." ** Exclusive on ISIS Loses ------------------------------------------------------------ ISIS has lost 45% of the territory it once held in Iraq and 20% of areas it controlled in Syria, according to new estimates by a US-led coalition combating the extremist group, as Jim Michaels reports in an USA Today exclusive (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/05/17/exclusive-isil-loses-45-territory-iraq-20-syria/84499682/ ) . Meanwhile, another wave of explosions in Baghdad killed at least 70 people today, as the Wall Street Journal’s Ghassan Adnan and Asa Fitch report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/blasts-roar-again-through-baghdad-1463490156 ) . Dive Deeper: A new report (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-military-forces-fy-2017) by CSIS’s Mark Cancian examines the Defense Department’s FY 2017 budget proposal for the size and shape of military forces; what that proposal means for cost, strategy, and risk; and challenges the proposal faces in implementation. ** In that Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** $5 billion ------------------------------------------------------------ Interpol says smugglers made over $5 billion by smuggling migrants into southern Europe last year. Source: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-smugglers-idUSKCN0Y81J4) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “In terms of the overall geopolitics of the rebalance or the pivot, probably the most significant part is the American reinvestment in Southeast Asia, which has been episodic for our entire history.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Mike Green on President Obama’s upcoming visit to Asia. Source: CSIS Press Briefing (https://www.csis.org/events/csis-press-briefing-president-obamas-trip-asia) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Tufts University.) Turns out the vast majority (85%) of videos on Facebook are watched in silence. Digiday reports (http://digiday.com/platforms/silent-world-facebook-video/) on what that means for Facebook and for online video. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ Today is a celebration day at CSIS—we flipped the switch and relaunched our website! A lot of people worked hard on the new CSIS.org, and we are so happy you all can now use it. So, as the incomparable BB King used to say, “Let the good times roll! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YilKId6BQ1s) ” I miss you B! ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
