The Broward County Democratic Black Caucus is a part of the Democratic
Black Caucus of Florida. The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida was
conceived
during meetings right here in Broward County at the Westin Diplomat Hotel
in Hollywood, Florida during the 1981 Florida State Democratic Party
Convention

Black delegates at the 1981 Florida State Democratic Party Convention felt
the need for increasing the power and influence of Black Democrats within
the party.
A decision was made at the Convention to unite Black Democrats throughout
the State, resulting in the organization of the Democratic Black Caucus of
Florida.
The caucus was recognized on September 24, 1983, by the Florida Democratic
Party as an official affiliate organization.
The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida was established to unite and
increase the political power for Black Democrats who went unnoticed. The
Caucus is an integral
part of the Florida Democratic Party’s infrastructure, which unites talent
with opportunity to facilitate voter building through educational forums,
effecting voter registration
drives (EVRD), Get Out The Vote (GOTV), voter action network (VAN), vote by
mail (VBM), and support qualified candidates approved by the Black Caucus.

NOTE: The DBCF original founders included our Representatives to the US
Congress Carrie Meek and Corrine Brown as well as community activists such
as Hazel Armbrister. Our biggest local supporters are Congressman Alcee
Hastings, FL Representatives Gwyn Clarke-Reed and Hazelle Rogers, Broward
Democratic Party Chair Mitch Ceasar, Glynda Lynton/Walter Crosson
(AFL-CIO), Voter Rights Advocate and Defense Attorney Tom O'Connell, P.A.,
Broward Commissioners Dale Holness and Martin D. Kiar and former FL State
House Democratic leader Perry Thurston.
