Good Evening, Welcome to The Evening CSIS—my daily guide to key insights CSIS brings to the events of the day plus HIGHLY RECOMMENDED content from around the world. To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) . ** Eyes on Hiroshima ------------------------------------------------------------ President Obama will be the first US president while in office to visit Hiroshima, since the US dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city 71 years ago. As the New York Times’ Gardiner Harris reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/26/world/asia/obama-hiroshima-visit.html) , the visit speaks volumes about the increasing struggles among the powers of East Asia. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Michael Green, Matthew Goodman, and Murray Hiebert held a briefing on the president’s trip for members of the media last week. The briefing transcript is available for download (https://www.csis.org/events/csis-press-briefing-president-obamas-trip-asia) . Plus, CSIS’s Scott Kennedy and Chris Johnson had a new report published this week, Perfecting China, Inc. (https://www.csis.org/analysis/perfecting-china-inc) , which examines China’s 13th Five-Year Plan. Further, CSIS’s Bonnie Glaser and the iDeas Lab recently launched "ChinaPower (http://chinapower.csis.org/) ," an immersive micro-website that provides users with interactive tools and analysis to compare Chinese power with that of other countries. And, CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) (http://amti.csis.org/) , an interactive micro-website developed with the CSIS iDeas Lab, tracks all of the happenings in maritime Asia. ** New Taliban Boogie ------------------------------------------------------------ The Taliban today named religious leader Maulavi Haibatullah to take charge of an insurgency at a crossroads, divided within its ranks and fighting multiple enemies in its drive to expand across Afghanistan, as the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Donati and Habib Khan Totakhil report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/taliban-names-maulavi-haibatullah-as-new-leader-1464156389) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman authored a new commentary: “Afghanistan: Deciding the Future of the Not Quite ‘Forgotten War.’ (https://www.csis.org/analysis/afghanistan-deciding-future-not-quite-%E2%80%9Cforgotten-war%E2%80%9D) ” And Brooking’s Michael O’Hanlon has a new commentary: “Don’t hold back on fighting the Taliban. (http://www.brookings.edu/blogs/order-from-chaos/posts/2016/05/23-fighting-taliban-afghanistan-ohanlon) ” Plus, the Atlantic Council’s Ashish Kumar Sen penned a commentary: “Taliban Leader’s Death Put’s Pakistan on Notice (http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/taliban-leader-s-death-puts-pakistan-on-notice) .” ** Horrifying Capsize ------------------------------------------------------------ The deadly capsizing of a migrant boat in the Mediterranean has been caught on camera by the Italian navy as it rescued 562 people, as the BBC reports (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36383897) . The LA Times reports (http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-libya-capsize-20160525-snap-story.html) at least five people are dead as a result of the accident. ** In that Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 4 ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of suspected Islamic State recruiters that Belgian authorities recently brought in under terror charges. Source: New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/05/25/world/europe/ap-eu-belgium-extremists-arrested.html?_r=0) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The US has tried to steer India away from deepening ties with Iran. But India and the US share a strong and growing strategic interest, which means they can do some things that are in the interest of one and not the other, without risking the relationship: it’s deep enough to withstand that.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Rick Rossow on India’s ties with Iran. Source: CS Monitor (http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Global-News/2016/0524/How-significant-is-India-s-500-million-deal-with-Iran) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Twitter.) He’s still at it. So are the living members of The Dead. They are very much alive. Not only did a 6 hour set of their music performed by some of the key young artists working music come out last week (“Day of the Dead”), but Bobby Weir et al have teamed up with John Mayer to tour this summer as “Dead & Company.” They won’t fade away. No one wants them too. They are the still one of the greatest smiles in music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cutI6c75TrM) . ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
