GFI joins new partners for informality project in Tunisia
In collaboration with Partners for Democratic Change, the Tunisia
Association for Management and Stability, and a core set of local
organizations, GFI begins work this month on the Tunisia Inclusive
Labor Initiative (TILI). This two-year project, funded by the U.S.
Department of State, aims to help Tunisia create a more inclusive
legal and economic framework for informal Tunisian workers, thus
ensuring them access to decent work and to government-mandated
protections.

GFI and its partners will begin by establishing a baseline assessment
of the government's existing capacity to integrate informal workers
and of the size, condition, and barriers to formalization of
Tunisia's informal sector. Using our successful multi-stakeholder
approach, TILI will engage workers, the private sector, civil
society, and government at the ministerial and administrative levels.
Targeted roundtables of stakeholders will develop strategies for
progressive economic integration, leading to a national collaboration
to produce specific policy and structural recommendations.

Resulting policies, relationships, and pilot programs will promote
the integration of informal workers into the formal labor market --
with special attention to women and youth -- helping to provide them
with sustainable employment, equal representation, and access to
government services. As with all our programs, GFI will gradually
transition ownership of the project so that the capability for
continued success lies with our local partners.

Partners for Democratic Change (PDC) has actively promoted a culture
of change and conflict management in the Middle East since 2004 with
work in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the
Palestinian Territories, Morocco, and Yemen. Building on the success
of PDC Centers in Europe and Latin America, PDC established its first
local Center in Jordan in 2004 and its second in Yemen in 2009. The
Centers, staffed entirely by in-country professionals, have
spearheaded local initiatives to resolve conflicts in local
communities.

The Tunisia Association for Management and Social Stability (TAMSS),
an NGO promoting community development and entrepreneurship, was
founded in 2006 in Tunisia's capital. TAMSS's mission is to bring
sustainable development to poor communities by strengthening the
economic and social capacities of families, working especially with
women and youth. Through the establishment of innovative and
complementary financial and non-financial products and services --
like leadership training, education, and the provision of responsible
micro-credit -- TAMSS has helped in the development of over 2,000
micro-enterprises, 90% of which are still in operation.

Benjamin Banneker Development Corporation (BBDC) announces
scholarship fund for GFI's Sapin Fellowship

GFI is honored to have the support and leadership of BBDC as we
train, mentor, and empower young leaders in Washington, DC. The
partnership with BBDC will ensure that Dr. Shirley Sapin's mission to
promote social activism and civil rights will continue by inspiring
future generations to participate in issues and programs at the heart
of achieving economic access for the working poor.
