Oct 5, 8:04 AM TEAM HUNTER PLAYER NEWS SINCE SUN, OCT 7 Ray Rice - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Rice had 102 rushing yards on 17 carries and one catch for 16 receiving yards Sunday against the Chiefs. A very solid line for Rice, although fantasy owners were likely expecting a rushing touchdown with those numbers. Rice was one of the only high points in the game, as the Ravens battled to a 9-6 win. Rice will have an interesting matchup next week against a Cowboys defense that is excellent against the pass, but is mediocre against the run. Cam Newton - (Tue, Oct 9, 2012) Was Cam Newton's Rookie Season A Fluke? Rapper Bun B, Eric Mangini, Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless discuss Cam Newton's struggles in his second season in the NFL. /media/motion/2012/1009/dm_121009_nfl_debate_cam_newton_fluke/dm_121009_nfl_debate_cam_newton_fluke.jpg Cam Newton - (Mon, Oct 8, 2012) Countdown Daily Hot Topics: Week 5 Antonio Pierce answers your facebook questions /media/motion/2012/1008/com_121008_nfl_CDDHotTopicsWk5/com_121008_nfl_CDDHotTopicsWk5.jpg Cam Newton - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Newton completed 12-of-29 passes for 141 yards Sunday against the Seahawks. He also added seven carries for 42 yards. An absolutely dreadful game for Newton, who struggled to connect with receivers throughout the day. He threw 13 passes to wideout Steve Smith, but managed to connect only four times. And while he led the Panthers in rushing, his total was less than half of what he had the prior week against the Falcons. Newton's passing yards have progressively decreased with each game this season and he's thrown for more than one touchdown in only a single game this year. The Panthers have a bye next week and Newton's fantasy owners are surely hoping that the team can figure out a solution to its problems quickly. Trent Richardson - (Wed, Oct 10, 2012) Fantasy Advice from "The League" The League's Nick Kroll joins Michele Steele to talk about the upcoming season, his own fantasy prowess, and how to freak out your opponents. /media/motion/2012/1010/dm_121010_fantasy_kroll_interview/dm_121010_fantasy_kroll_interview.jpg Trent Richardson - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Richardson rushed for 81 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown in Sunday's loss at New York. He also hauled in five catches on seven targets for 47 yards. Richardson ran very well Sunday, breaking tackles and looking quick and light on his feet. He certainly appears to be fully recovered from the knee issues he's dealt with for the better part of the past year. He is the focal point of the Browns offense which will provide him with a consistent weekly workload and combined with his obvious talent, he is a solid start in all formats moving forward. Trent Richardson - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Richardson (personal) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants, Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. His absence Friday was to attend the birth of his child. Richardson figures to see his usually heavy workload against the Giants on Sunday. Frank Gore - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Gore had 14 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Bills. A very impressive performance for Gore, who did a lot with limited touches in a 49ers' blowout. Backup Kendall Hunter had 81 rushing yards on 11 carries, although fantasy owners shouldn't read too much into it, since the game wasn't close and the team decided to not ride Gore all day. Jeremy Maclin - (Mon, Oct 8, 2012) Maclin caught five passes for 39 yards against Pittsburgh on Sunday. It's a disappointing showing from Maclin, but at least he seems to be making steady progress in his recovery from his hip injury. We like his chances of regaining his pre-injury production against the Lions next Sunday. Vernon Davis - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Davis had five catches for 106 yards Sunday against the Bills. Davis broke through the 100-yard barrier for the first time this season, although he hasn't scored a touchdown in each of the past two games. He remains a very big part of the 49ers' passing offense and he could be busy again next week against the Giants. Tony Gonzalez - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Gonzalez had 13 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Redskins. A pretty standard game for a 36-year-old tight end, right? Gonzalez has been a real treat for fantasy owners that didn't jump for a tight end early in drafts, as he's now scored a touchdown in four of the first five games this season. He's got another positive matchup next week against a Raiders defense that was ranked 26th in pass defense heading into Week 5. Tony Romo - (Wed, Oct 3, 2012) Theismann Doesn't Think Romo Is That Good Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith discuss Joe Theismann's comments about Tony Romo. /media/motion/2012/1003/dm_121003_nfl_debate_theismann_on_romo/dm_121003_nfl_debate_theismann_on_romo.jpg Michael Bush - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Bush had four rushed for 26 yards and added two catches for 26 yards Sunday against the Jaguars. A healthy Matt Forte touched the ball 24 times to Bush's six. With Forte back as the bell cow, Bush becomes a risky proposition in fantasy circles, unless he gets red zone work and a score. Ben Tate - (Wed, Oct 10, 2012) Tate (toe) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, the Texans' official site reports. Coach Gary Kubiak expects Tate to play Sunday against the Packers, but given the Texans' 8:20 ET kickoff this week, if there's any doubt regarding the running back's Week 6 status as the weekend approaches, then he'll be a risky play. Ben Tate - (Tue, Oct 9, 2012) Tate (toe) was not close to being ready to play Monday night, according to head coach Gary Kubiak, the Texans' official site reports. Tate was inactive for Monday night's win over the Jets after a week in which he saw only limited practice action. Kubiak said he'll get a look at Tate on Wednesday. Ben Tate - (Mon, Oct 8, 2012) Tate (toe) is inactive Monday night against the Jets. In Tate's absence, Justin Forsett is in line to handle the Texans' backup RB carries on Monday behind unquestioned starter Arian Foster. He's worth a quick plug-in for those in a jam due to Tate's deactivation. Ben Tate - (Mon, Oct 8, 2012) Tate (toe) is unlikely to play Monday night against the Jets, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Arian Foster will lead the Texans' rushing attack Monday, but if Tate is indeed scratched, then Justin Forsett would move up a peg and would be worth scooping up by anyone who had plans to use Tate on Monday. David Akers - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Akers was successful in his lone field goal attempt, a 19-yarder in the first quarter, and made all six of his extra point attempts during Sunday's win over the Bills. The Bills defense was a disaster, coughing up over 600 yards to the 49ers' offense, so there was little need for Akers on Sunday. He remains an outstanding option for fantasy owners and will obviously get more field goal attempts against stronger defenses. Brent Celek - (Mon, Oct 8, 2012) Celek caught three passes for nine yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Celek continues to post decent but unremarkable numbers. He could be more active next Sunday against a Detroit squad that has been vulnerable through the air. Alex Smith - (Wed, Oct 10, 2012) Smith's sprained right middle finger is not affecting his throws in practice, CSN Bay Area reports. Regarding Smith's throwing hand, coach Jim Harbaugh stated, "He says he's going good, and it's not something that's a big deal or to worry about." Smith, who suffered the injury on his final pass of San Francisco's blowout win over Buffalo, may have "a little tape for support" on his finger, but that shouldn't affect his grip on the football too much. Barring a setback, expect him to be fine for Sunday's matchup with the Giants. Alex Smith - (Tue, Oct 9, 2012) When asked about Smith's middle finger injury, coach Jim Harbaugh said that, "It's very much of a concern," the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "We'll see how it is. Alex, it's well-documented how tough he is. He talks about it not being a big deal. So we'll see," Harbaugh added. Official x-ray results have yet to be released, but Smith is referring to the injury as a sprain. He said he was hurt when Bills defensive end Mario Williams hit him as a he threw an incomplete pass in the fourth quarter of Sunday's win. With the game well in-hand, Smith left the game and did not return for the team's final 12 plays. No one has said anything about his status being in doubt for this Sunday's match-up with the Giants, but the situation should be monitored. Alex Smith - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Sunday Blitz: Bills-49ers Recap Jim Basquil and Eric Allen break down the the 49ers' record-setting performance as they blow past the Bills 45-3. /media/motion/2012/1007/dm_121007_cdd_bills_49ers/dm_121007_cdd_bills_49ers.jpg Alex Smith - (Sun, Oct 7, 2012) Smith has a sprain on the middle finger of his throwing hand, Comcast SportsNet's Matt Maiocco reports. Smith threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills, before leaving the game once the lead was safe. No word on if the sprain will force him to miss any time, but the injury may limit his ability to grip the ball. We'd be surprised if he missed a game, but consider him questionable until he practices with the sprain.
