GAMETIME! VOLLEYBALL: SEPT. 23 PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS (PAS) WELCOME RECEPTION: SEPT. 20 MS/US PARENTS: INTRODUCTION TO QUAKER MEETING: SEPT. 26 DONATE BLOOD FOR ALL THE LITTLE REASONS! CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WILLIAM PENN HOUSE Other PARENT/GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, This second week of school, students have begun to settle into their routines and adjust to the various demands on their time. Homework, of course, was added to the daily set of tasks and responsibilities. Advisors checked in with advisees this week, and many advisors---9th grade advisors in particular---talked with students about time management and balancing the many obligations and demands on students’ time. If you feel your child needs additional support in this area, please reach out to your child’s advisor. At Wednesday’s Collection, Upper School students learned about the Honor Committee and Student Government. The elected students who serve on these committees gave engaging and informative presentations on the important work that these groups play in School life. Elections for 9th grade representatives for Honor Committee and Student Government will take place on Monday, September 26. Interested students must speak with 9th Grade Dean Diane Scattergood by Monday, September 19. To run for one of these positions, students will prepare a two-minute speech. Please encourage your 9th grader to take a chance and run for one of these elected positions. Whether the student is a lifer or brand new to Sidwell Friends this year, we welcome all to participate. This coming Wednesday’s Collection period is devoted to our annual club fair. Student clubs will set up tables in the Sledge Garden and share information about their clubs with the School community, encouraging new members to join. There are many different clubs for students to select, ranging from Robotics to the Tea Club. Please encourage your child to join a new club this year! On Thursday, September 22, at 6:00 p.m. (note the new start time), we will have our Upper School Back-to-School Night. We have moved the location of the opening program to the Athletic Center. Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Athletic Center. Parents and guardians may check in and pick up nametags and individual schedules in the courtyard area near the Athletic Center entrance. Shortly, you will receive an e-mail with additional details about the evening, including individualized schedules for each family. If you are unable to attend Back-to-School Night, please feel free to reach out to your child’s advisor for general information about your child’s classes. September 23 is the deadline to drop a class without a “Withdrawn Pass” or “Withdrawn Fail” appearing on the transcript. If you are concerned about your child’s placement in a course, please contact your child’s teacher as well as Assistant Principal/Academic Dean Min Kim this week before the deadline. Below are the dates for the first semester Parent Coffees. Please note the new date for the 12th Grade Parent Coffee. 9th grade parents: September 16, October 13 10th grade parents: October 14 11th grade parents: October 7 12th grade parents: October 6 (new date) Time: 8:00--9:00 a.m. Place: RLS Meeting Room Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements FALL POTLUCKS Now that school is in full swing, please consider hosting a potluck. Fall potlucks are an enduring Sidwell Friends tradition where small groups of parents from your child’s class or team gather together to share food and fun. As a host, you have the flexibility to pick any weekend date in October or November that works best for your family. If you are able to host or have questions about hosting, simply contact Ellen Alexander at ellena@comcast.net and tell us the dates that work for you and the number of guests that you would like to host. Typically, 10 to 14 parents (including the hosts) attend each potluck, but smaller or larger potlucks work as well. ADMISSIONS 2016/17 The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has shifted its timeline this year with the hopes of being able to better serve all of the families that come through our process. The online application for the 2017/18 school year is available on September 1, 2016 at http://www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials/index.aspx The deadline to submit the online application if you are applying a sibling or if you are a member of the faculty/staff is October 1, 2016. All supplementary forms (teacher recommendations, testing, parent statement, applicant questionnaire, and transcripts) as well as the applicant visit or interview are due by November 18, 2016. All of these forms and the admissions timelines are available by logging into the online application. Families at-large may submit the online application until December 15, 2016 and should have the supplemental forms and visits or interviews completed by January 15, 2017. If you have additional questions, please contact the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111. We look forward to working with your family this admissions season. Events PARENT PEER GROUPS FACILITATOR TRAININGS: SEPT. 27, OCT. 5 SFS has a unique, longstanding tradition of hosting Parent Peer Group Meetings to give parents an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss common non-academic, grade-specific issues in a friendly and supportive environment. The events, which are held twice a year, are led by parents for parents with an agenda determined by those attending. All parents interested in facilitating Parent Peer Groups this year, or just interested in learning more about these opportunities, are invited to attend one of the upcoming mandatory training sessions— either September 27, 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the MS Drama Studio on the Wisconsin Avenue campus, or October 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the LS Quaker Meeting House on the Bethesda campus. (Light refreshments will be served prior to both sessions.) We also strongly encourage anyone who has served as a facilitator in the past to attend one of these sessions. Please e-mail Alison Schafer (schafer.alison@gmail.com) or Alpa Chernof (chernof2276@gmail.com) if you have any questions or would like to attend either training. Come learn about the exciting events planned for this school year! This is going to be a fun year of celebrations, gatherings, and discovery. The PAS Committee seeks to create an environment that strengthens awareness of Asian cultures, languages, heritages, and Asian American history and experiences within the Sidwell Friends Community. The PAS achieves its mission by supporting cultural, social, and educational events for the School community. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Please RSVP by September 19 at sidwellpas@gmail.com. MS/US PARENTS: INTRODUCTION TO QUAKER MEETING: SEPT. 26 Parents are invited to join the MS and US Quaker Life Committee clerks for coffee, an introduction to Quaker Meeting, and a short period of reflection and sharing on Monday, September 26, at 8:00 a.m. in the Zartman House Drawing Room. We will finish by 8:45 a.m. Where: Zartman House Drawing Room DONATE BLOOD FOR ALL THE LITTLE REASONS! On Wednesday, September 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sidwell Friends will be holding a blood drive for Children's National Medical Center. The bloodmobile will be parked on Zartman Circle. Theses drives are extremely important for the children who depend upon CNMC. The hemo/oncology department currently treats more than 1,400 kids who need blood transfusions. Sickle cell patients need transfusions every four to six weeks. You must sign up in advance. Click here to sign up online. Please make certain to go to the site and read the eligibility restrictions. Some pertain to current medications or vaccinations, travel outside the United States (especially where Zika virus is a concern), dental work, weight, age, and general health. Donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh more than 110 pounds. Please bring a photo ID with you, eat a meal (breakfast or lunch), and drink at least 16 ounces of water before your arrival. CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WILLIAM PENN HOUSE The Sidwell Friends community is invited to William Penn House’s 50th Anniversary and Day of Service on Saturday, October 8. Families, individuals, and groups of all ages are welcome to attend. Come enjoy fun, food, and fellowship to celebrate 50 years of service and activism in Washington, DC. The day will include hands-on projects supporting the William Penn Quaker Workcamps’ urban gardening program. In the tradition of Quaker service, participants honor the Light in others, build community, and make love visible. Enjoy a BBQ lunch, complete with a visit from William Penn himself! The event is free, but registration is required. Register by September 26 at http://williampennhouse.org/program/354. William Penn House is an important partner to Sidwell Friends students of all ages. In addition to traveling to New Orleans and West Virginia on WPH workcamps, many 5th, 6th, and 9th graders have helped plant community gardens in DC. Other PARENT/GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY We are looking for parent or grandparent volunteers on the Wisconsin Avenue campus the morning of Wednesday, September 28, to help prepare for distribution of the Community Handbook and Sidwell Friends Directory. Tasks include labeling, stuffing, and sorting envelopes. Coffee and a morning snack will be provided. If you can spare a few hours, please contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) or sign up here. Thank you! QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “One of our problems as Americans—at least, among my race and gender—is that we resist the very idea of limits, regarding limits of all sorts as temporary and regrettable impositions on our lives. Our national myth is about the endless defiance of limits: opening the western frontier, breaking the speed of sound, dropping people on the Moon, discovering cyberspace at the very moment when we have filled old-fashioned space with so much junk that we can barely move. We refuse to take no for an answer. Part of me treasures the hopefulness of this American legacy. But when I consistently refuse to take no for an answer, I miss the vital clues to my identity that arise when way closes—and I am more likely both to exceed my limits and to do harm to others in the process.” ---Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak (Jossey-Bass, 1999) Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
