Hunter- All eyes will be on the first presidential debate one week from tonight - potentially breaking the TV record for the final episode of M*A*S*H or even the 2015 Super Bowl. Hopefully foreign policy will get its fair share of questions, especially with world leaders gathering in NYC this week, not to mention the latest attacks. What would you ask at the debate? I know what I would, but email me your best question. Surprisingly, the one issue that is actually breaking through the partisan divide in Washington is the global development agenda. Last week, in a TIME Magazine op-ed, I wrote about the impressive success of five bipartisan bills that passed Congress - all advancing U.S. global leadership. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=fRsBLTtvKgCCekCkOHVfQQ Read our pre-debate edition of THE GLOBAL GAB with the latest on the campaign trail, unexpected polling, and the budget battles on Zika. Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC THE GLOBAL GAB: Debate watch - What would you ask? September 19, 2016 POLLING GLOBAL. It's not just "the economy, stupid" - polls are showing national security/foreign policy as one of the top three issues for voters. Despite anti-trade rhetoric from both the left and the right, a recent Chicago Council survey found 2 out of 3 voters believe globalization is mostly good for the U.S. and 70% say international trade benefits U.S. consumers. SMARTER THAN A COLLEGE STUDENT? In another poll - this one by the Council of Foreign Relations and National Geographic - 81% of college-aged students say that knowledge of global events is essential in today's world. Unfortunately, the data also shows that younger folks still have a tad to learn about global affairs! Just under one half knew that the U.S. is bound by a treaty to defend Canada if our ally were attacked, and just 28% knew the same about Japan. DEBATE CHANGE. With the first of the official debates in just seven days, there will be no stand-alone "foreign policy debate" as we've seen in past years. Instead, national security and foreign policy - along with other themes - will be integrated into all three presidential debates. STRANGE BEDFELLOWS. Former GOP presidential hopeful and Ohio Governor John Kasich joined President Obama in the Oval Office last Friday to discuss the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal - along with Mike Bloomberg, Henry Paulson, IBM's CEO, and Admiral James Stavridis. After the meeting, Kasich spoke from an unlikely spot - the White House Briefing Room: "I worry about the future of this country. America can't afford to lock the doors and lower the blinds and ignore the rest of the world. We're a force for good." MATH ERROR. It's no secret that building a new wall along our southern border is a chief campaign promise for Donald Trump - and there's no shortage of opinions on who should pay the estimated $25 billion price tag. Some have suggested that foreign aid to Mexico could be diverted, but U.S. assistance to Mexico makes up less than 1% of what experts estimate the wall would cost. The math doesn't add up. BUZZWORTHY. Just 12 days until the end of the fiscal year and (finally!) a deal seems within reach to combat Zika. The package - which should pass along with a broader spending bill later this week - includes about $1.1 billion to fight the epidemic. The good news is that lawmakers finally found common ground - but it took seven months. According to the CDC, more than 19,000 U.S. citizens have contracted the virus, including 1,500+ pregnant women. On funding the government, expect a short-term deal through December 9, requiring another lame duck agreement after the election. CAMPAIGN TRAIL MEMO. With 34 Senate and all 435 House races on the ballot this November, the USGLC network has already met with more than 130 congressional candidates - providing educational briefings on diplomacy and global development. Compared to the last two election cycles, the candidates are not only more eager to go deeper on foreign policy, but overall, are more knowledgeable. Bodes well for the 115th Congress. 21st BIGGEST COUNTRY. Frightening factoid from Save the Children: The 65.3 million displaced people around the world would make up the 21st largest country by population. To address this crisis, POTUS is hosting a first-ever Leaders' Summit on Refugees at the UN General Assembly tomorrow, seeking new global commitments from the private and public sectors to support the growing number of refugees - 24 per minute. A staggering figure. EXIT INTERVIEW. Georgetown and POLITICO have kicked off "exit interviews" with soon-to-be departing cabinet members. First up: National Security Advisor Susan Rice who was asked to name an underappreciated accomplishment. Pointing to the Ebola crisis in West Africa, Rice answered, "American leadership - especially by the president, our military, humanitarian responders, and public health officials - saved tens of thousands of lives, if not more." BACK TO SCHOOL. The USGLC was out in full force at the University of New Hampshire on the first day of school for a packed event with Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Admiral James Stavridis. Here is the recap in the New Hampshire Union Leader. Watch for our pre-election http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=V4UudiFcFhBOfs6EhxpA3w Impact 2016 events with Secretary Bob Gates in Ohio and General Stanley McChrystal in Florida to raise the issue of U.S. global leadership in the final days of the race.
