Dear Long Beach Country Club members-

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday spent with family and friends and I’m sure the Notre Dame win certainly capped off the weekend nicely for many of you. With the season winding down and winter and Christmas fast approaching, I on behalf of Serviscape and my staff, wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for a fantastic year at Long Beach. The above average temperatures and below average rainfall once again provided ample opportunity for everyone to come out and enjoy the golf course. Hopefully, most of you were able to take full advantage of the past summer.

As of today, the greens are closed. Temporary pins have been placed in the approaches except for the fifth hole, which is completely closed. Please do not continue to hit shots to the greens because grass growth has stopped and ball marks will not heal themselves. Also, please remember that when frost is present, play is not permitted until all frost has melted. If the ground is frozen or there is snow cover, carts are not permitted, but walkers are still welcome to play.

We wanted to thank all of our Adopt-a-hole participants for your continued help filling divots this year. We also wanted to thank Mark Pacelli for his numerous hours he spent cutting vines growing on trees in many of our non-play areas. Thanks also to those who took a minute and filled an extra divot or fixed an extra ball mark, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

This was a very challenging summer to grow grass and keep grass alive. We had over 25 days where the temperature was 90 degrees or above and many more days that were in upper 80’s. Our warmest day of the year was actually July 4th where the mercury climbed to 101 here and 106 in Laporte. The severe drought conditions that persisted from early spring through mid-July also took it toll on both grass and trees. While many area and regional golf courses saw widespread grass loss and death, we were able to keep most of our surfaces alive and playable. Hopefully this weather is not the new normal.

Once again, thank you for an outstanding year. We look forward to seeing everyone again next season. Have a safe winter and happy holidays.
