Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman leaders had a great turnout at the polls across the country, and Truman advocated against the deployment of troops to the U.S.-Mexico border and the ascension of Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to oversee Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation. Truman also put on a training workshop for the annual American Council of Young Political Leaders’ Fall Congress.


Katherine Southwick

Katherine Southwick is a Visiting Scholar at George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. She is a Doctoral Candidate in Law at the National University of Singapore, where her dissertation research relates to theories of rule of law for ethnically divided societies. Before returning to graduate study, Southwick worked for a decade on human rights, humanitarian advocacy, and legal reform in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. For three and a half years, she worked for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in Washington, DC, and the Philippines on programs relating to judicial reform, anti-trafficking in persons, and the ASEAN human rights system. In 2008, she was the Robert L. Bernstein Fellow at Refugees International in
Washington, DC, where she carried out research and advocacy on the global problem of statelessness. She has also clerked for a federal district judge and practiced international arbitration in a major law firm. She has worked in the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser, and for human rights organizations in India and Uganda. Southwick grew up in Africa as the child of U.S. Foreign Service parents and holds both a BA and JD from Yale University.

Bangladesh has appeared in various international media and scholarly outlets. She has worked with civil society groups to promote the passage of legislation in the U.S. Congress’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee imposing sanctions on senior Myanmar officials implicated in violence against the minority group. She continues to serve as an expert witness in asylum cases in the United States and Europe involving persons of Eritrean-Ethiopian origin. As co-leader of the Truman Asia Expert Group, Southwick has also recently organized an event on reassessing Congress’s role in foreign affairs, under the Trump Administration and after the midterm elections. She is particularly focused on connecting Truman members with experts and activists from Asia and bolstering women’s
engagement in the organization’s activities.

Truman and the Midterms
On 06 November, Truman leaders had an outstanding turnout at the polls. We congratulate Congressmen-elect Jason Crow in Colorado and Mike Levin in California, and special recognition is also in order for Congresswoman-elect Ayanna Pressley, who has become the first African American woman to represent a Massachusetts congressional district. All three of Truman’s incumbent House members (Congressmen Seth Moulton, Ruben Gallego, and Josh Gottheimer) secured their reelections as well. Meanwhile, of 30 Truman leaders running for state and local office, 26 won their races. It is clear from election results across the nation that the age of unchecked Trumpism is now over, and we are excited for Truman to continue stepping up as the House of Representatives reasserts itself as an oversight
authority. Truman at ACYPL
On 14 November in Washington, DC, Truman staff conducted two training workshops for almost 300 Professional Fellows from 60 countries at the American Council of Young Political Leaders’ Fall Congress.

The trainings included a variant of our Strategic Communications deck, as well as Change Makers, a leadership development workshop focused on purposeful direction in reaching professional goals. The Congress marked the completion of a five to six week fellowship, in partnership with U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which was designed to help support the development of each fellow’s project, program, or organization to impact their respective communities. Following the Strategic Communications training, more than 10 Truman members and staff were on hand to provide coaching and give feedback to the Fellows as they practiced presenting their project ideas. The coaches stressed the importance of personal narrative, confidence, concise delivery,
passionate speaking, and projecting leadership traits. This marks the fifth such Congress that Truman has participated in.

Truman Speaks Against Border Deployment
At the end of October, President Trump deployed active duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, and Truman has since spoken out repeatedly against this decision. After all, the caravan that prompted this deployment is not a true threat to our national security, and the U.S. armed forces do not train to simply transport supplies or escort Customs and Border Protection officers around at the border. No easy solution exists to stopping hate and extremism--there is no quick fix. However, by focusing on purposeful action, morality in countering violence against women, and unity in the face of extremism, we can try to work towards a world where these attacks do not happen.
