Patriots,

The white supremacist violence in Charlottesville today is a direct challenge to all that this community stands for. Together with many other leaders and organizations who share our belief in pluralism, we have every intention to respond.

Thank you to those of you who have already begun spurring discussion and taking action. As always, Tony Johnson's leadership and wisdom in particular is a guide for us all.

The team at HQ is already hard at work on ways for us all to respond and engage in the coming days, in line with our 2017 organizing strategy. I encourage everyone to add to that effort, online or together in smaller groups, and contribute your strategic insight and ideas.

In the immediate term, I'd ask that all of you lend whatever public support you can to Charlottesville Mayor and long-time Truman Mike Signer (@MikeSigner). This is also an important time to reach out to those in your Chapters and your communities who are particularly threatened by the overt racism and anti-Sematism on grotesque display today. Let them know that you stand with them, and that everyone who wears the Truman torch is fully committed to defending the civil and human rights of all our neighbors, full stop.

We have just released a public statement calling on the president to explicitly renounce white supremacist hate groups, re-prioritize the programs that combat violence driven by hateful ideologies that he has taken steps to cut, and fire Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka from their White House positions immediately. This is not a version of America that any of us should be prepared to accept. Thanks to all of you for taking care of one another, and for being prepared to stand up and defend our values.
