Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story, Happy Valley) and executive-produced by Martin Scorsese, “Long Strange Trip” is not a sugar coated scholarly tome about the band. It’s an unflinching look at the counter-culture surrounding the Dead—both the beauty and sense of menace. Most of all, I love how the film explores the unique American spirit the band embodied—their sense of inclusiveness, adventure and love of the land. The film explains how the Dead appropriated the spirit of Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” and never got off the road, even when they should have. And the music! It’s astonishingly good—even for the most jaded listener. One of the best segments of the film occurs when Senator Al Franken (D-MN), a veteran Deadhead, declares that the best all-time version of “Althea” was performed in May of 1980 at Nassau Coliseum. And Senator Franken is absolutely right! You can hear that version of the song on the Dead’s “Go to Nassau: May 15 & 16, 1980” album, or on the “Long Strange Trip” soundtrack. Or, you can watch this second best version of “Althea (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXbnHFJfzUU&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=759347d3df-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_08_14&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-759347d3df-145367789) ” from New Year’s eve 1979, Oakland Auditorium.
