FYI, the heights to which George McGovern will go to address global hunger... ________________________________ From: bulletin@wfpusa.org To: bulletin@wfpusa.org Date: Wed, 21 Jul 2010 13:13:30 -0400 Subject: Happy Birthday to a true hunger champion! [cid:image001.jpg@01CB28D6.F7E84D60]<http://www.wfpusa.org/> Happy Birthday to former Senator George McGovern! World Food Program USA (WFP USA) would like to take a moment to say Happy Birthday to former Senator and WFP USA Board Member George McGovern who turned 88 years old this week. To mark the occasion, McGovern chose to fulfill a life-long dream while also bringing attention to the cause closest to his heart: global childhood hunger. McGovern, who flew planes during WWII, decided to celebrate his 88th birthday by going skydiving for the first time in his life. "It gives you a new appreciation of the wonderful earth we live on...We used to fly at 25,000 feet on the missions that I piloted in WWII but I never had a chance to look down, I was always looking at the next plane to stay in formation. It's nice to be able to see the earth," McGovern said about the experience. He said that while the jump was an exhilarating personal experience, he also hoped it would bring some attention to the needs of hungry school-children around the world. "If in some way this little jump today focuses attention on that, that’s my major purpose," he said. See video from the jump here<http://usa.wfp.org/blog/former-senator-george-mcgovern-skydives-increase-awareness-hunger>. Happy Birthday once again to a true hunger champion! "I would like to live to be 100 ... not simply to live, but to work on the things that I'm primarily interested in - the most important [being] to provide a good meal, every day, for every hungry school-child in the world. We can do that without great cost." -Former Senator George McGovern on his 88th birthday The World Food Program / World Food Program USA The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, fighting hunger worldwide.
