Valerie and Fred— As you can imagine, Josh and I have had extensive conversations around the compensation issue. I had asked Josh, earlier this year, to abandon the Chief Engagement Officer title he had designated his position, and to consider the title of Chief Operating Officer. I suggested the COO designation for several reasons— most importantly is that the COO title more closely aligns with his duties. As I reviewed the job description Josh prepared for the Development Director position it is very clear he fills a COO position more than a Development Director. Josh does not want the traditional Development Director position for several reasons. He feels he has been demoted without just cause and that his emotional and professional commitment to the Foundation, and the position he has carved out justify his prior salary. Josh very clearly understands that the prior salary is not sustainable, nor would it be responsible for me and for the Board to allow that to continue. I agree that our working relationship is fundamental to continued success. I truly love Josh and love working with him—we have our moments for sure, but slowly he has begun to accept when final decisions have to be made, I will make them. Ceding control has been difficult for Josh before this compensation issue, it’s harder now. I also see clearly why he is not satisfied with the current situation. When I finalize and forward his job description I will recommend to the Executive Committee that his salary be set at $125,000. While clearly that is not nearly what Josh desires- its certainly reasonable for a COO in a similarly situated nonprofit. Understandably, that amount is not workable for Josh. I do believe I have some possible resolution if the funds can't come from work he would be assigned from another Biden entity. I will certainly explain in greater detail when I forward the finalized job descriptions, but briefly I propose that I shift programming dollars to one of our contractors- First Pic- who does a lot of event and project management. I would propose revising their contract to include some of the work that Josh has been doing in the event and project management area, and having Josh enter into a separate employment contract with First-Pic. Josh would have no input into the contract and not be involved with the negotiations or payment. It’s just an idea, and I welcome your input. Josh is now working on a revised job description. Claudine has provided a job description as well, which I am amending somewhat. I also have a job description. Once we have finalized those I will forward to the Executive Committee for input. I anticipate that will be by Friday 8/25. As you can imagine last week was been very busy with the Blue Rocks event. Turning to the Blue Rocks event, it was a total success. We had about 130 children participating in the on field activities. The kids had a great time! We made 50 child-id kits and had the opportunity to interact with many families. We gave all of the tickets that the Blue Rocks gave us to the PAL Centers of Delaware and had 90 kids from the PAL clubs -from four locations - at the event. We also had 16 members of law enforcement from 5 agencies, a few of my nephews who played college baseball, and my husband (a former Baltimore Oriole). There were 6 stations that the kids participated in- throwing, hitting, fielding, the K-9 unit ( a huge hit), a cyber-bullying chat and a great game of "quick ball." The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, First Pic and our volunteers all did a great job. There was a decent amount of press- the Channel 6 cameraman stayed through the day and videoed the making of child id kits as well as the infield activities. We should have pictures shortly. Plus, I was able to be in the broadcast booth for a few innings, talking about the foundation and what we are doing. Now…on to the golf and tennis tournament. I can tell you the silent auction is looking great!! Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss further. Best— Patty Patricia Dailey Lewis, Esquire Executive Director Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children www.beaubidenfoundation.org <http://www.beaubidenfoundation.org/> patty@beaubidenfoundation.org <mailto:patty@beaubidennfoundation.org> “We have seen the progress that can be made when society commits to shining a bright light on a crime like domestic violence, and we are seeing the beginning of what can be accomplished if we continue shining that bright light on child abuse. As adults, we have a legal and moral obligation to stand up and speak out for children who are being abused. These children cannot speak for themselves.” —Beau Biden > On Aug 22, 2017, at 11:38 AM, hurricane5155 <hurricane5155@gmail.com> wrote: > > Fred - you speak words if wisdom… Valerie >> On Aug 22, 2017, at 11:34 AM, fred sears <fsears11@gmail.com <mailto:fsears11@gmail.com>> wrote: >> >> Patty, >> How did the event go at the Blue Rocks on Sunday ? Seems to me that we might be able to justify a little more -- maybe $115 or $120 if we expand his responsibilities --, but not sure if that makes him feel better. >> You guys clearly need to work together to keep the organization running smoothly . Hard to believe he will be satisfied just doing fundraising and making $100K.
