R.Hunter: I have long believed that our federal budget is a reflection of our nation's most deeply held values. Unfortunately, the latest Republican budget includes damaging cuts for older Americans and Americans with disabilities.

The House GOP has proposed slashing nearly $500 billion from Medicare and Social Security Disability Insurance, playing politics with programs that provide assistance to Americans who need our support. If Republicans are successful, too many families and seniors will be forced to make impossible decisions, like choosing between seeing the doctor and buying groceries.

We need a budget that sustains a circle of protection for the most vulnerable among us and keeps the promises we have made to our seniors. We must support our neighbors who have served their community with a lifetime of hard work, and help those among us who have fallen on truly hard times. In this case, that means ensuring that our neighbors have access to health care, no matter what.
