Betsy DeVos has all but confirmed the fears many Americans had when she was picked to be President Trump’s Secretary of Education. Her recent statements on the possibility of rolling back Title IX protections that help survivors of sexual assault on college campuses hold their attackers accountable is the latest, and most disturbing, example.

That’s right, in an absolutely shameful move, DeVos is reaching out to set up meetings with so-called “men’s rights” groups, the same groups who are the first to point the finger at the survivors while callously dismissing these women’s claims of sexual assault.

I refuse to sit by and watch the way survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence are treated – often by the very people who should be helping.

It was not that long ago that I was a college student myself, and I knew of too many fellow students who were too afraid or ashamed to report their own attacks. It was heartbreaking to witness, and we need to end the culture of survivors feeling too intimidated to report their attackers.

We must speak out against extremism that creates an environment where women don’t feel safe. I have always fought for women and all survivors to have a safe place and somewhere to feel protected in the time when they need it most.

Now is the time to continue fighting back and speaking out. We can’t let DeVos give extremists the power to keep survivors of assault in the shadows.
