The economy added a robust 209,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department reported Friday, down from 231,000 in June.

Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 2.5 percent over the previous year. In June, they also were up 2.5 percent.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted the creation of 178,000 jobs, an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent, and an increase in over-the-year hourly earnings of 2.5 percent.
