Tuesday - January 28, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How can we find the words to speak up? NOTES FROM SALLY Assembly: “The New American” by Living Voices. Students will share the journey of The New American, from the turmoil of the old country, to the promise of America. This presentation of the immigrant journey includes the steamship passage of 1910, the path through Ellis Island, and the sweatshops of the lower east side of Manhattan. Yikes! My Child Has A Computer/iPad/Chromebook/KindleFire and seems to know more than I do! What can I do? Join us on the evening of February 10th for a parent workshop on "Managing the Internet in the Age of Handheld Devices". This workshop, led by Alecia Berman-Dry, Director of Academic Technology at St. John's Episcopal School, will help you learn what's different about how your child thinks about social media and what you can do as a parent to help your child make the right choices online. We will explore how living in an "apps" era has shaped this generation as well as study specific social media tools and how children and teens often use them. Information about Web filters for the home will be briefly covered as well. Finally, Ms. Berman-Dry will share resources for making a plan for how your family approaches managing all the new media. A light dinner will be served before the presentation, beginning at 7 PM. 37th Street reminders: please try not to arrive on 37th Street for pickup before 3:30p. Things flow much more smoothly if we can get the Hearst buses off the street before our line forms. Please remind anyone who drives for you of this request – it will help us all be more sane in the afternoon. Booklets describing the local Minimester options will go home with students today and will also be posted on the Parent Portal of the website. Choices are due to your child’s advisor or homeroom teacher by next Thursday, February 6. We have completed our count of the money collected to benefit victims of the typhoon in the Phillipines. I am delighted to send $650 to the Red Cross for relief efforts! CHORAL MUSIC NOTES The following vocal ensembles will be meeting this Wednesday, January 29th: Boys Ensemble will meet at 7:30 a.m. and again during 7/8 rehearsal period. Girls Ensemble will meet afterschool until 5:30 p.m. 6th Grade Chorus will meet during 5/6 rehearsal period this week. MATH MEETS ON FEB. 5TH Attention 6th through 8th Grade Parents: The second math meet of the year will be held on Wednesday, February 5th at St. Patrick’s School. Students will leave school around 2:15 pm and return to the SFS parking lot between 4 and 4:15 pm. Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader is eligible to attend, so if your child is interested, please encourage him or her to sign up with his or her math teacher as soon as possible. Students need to turn in a signed permission form to attend math meets, so if you haven’t already sent in a signed permission form this school year, be sure to do so. If for some reason the event is oversubscribed (each school can only bring 20 students), then 7th and 8th grade students will be given priority, and a lottery will be held for interested 6th graders to determine who attends. This is a great opportunity for your child to pursue his or her love of math with peers from other schools. At the meet, students work on six challenging problems under a time limit, and enjoy a delicious after school snack. Questions? Email Andrew Callard. PA Announcements ARTRAGEOUS 2014, RANDOM ACTS OF ART The PA Arts Committee would like to thank all of the amazing faculty, staff, students, and families who contributed to making Artrageous 2014, Random Acts of Art, a soaring success! The US Arts Center was abuzz with singing, dancing, instrument-playing, painting, sculpting, pottery-throwing, printing, iPad animating, hip-hopping, face-painting, drumming, community-service valentine and flower making, Boxopolis constructing, and general merry-making. Thank you to all who contributed their time and talent as volunteers and performers. Artrageous celebrates the Arts at Sidwell Friends and fosters a sense of community across all three divisions in the only all-school event for students, faculty, staff, and families. Artrageous is completely run by the PA Arts Committee. We welcome your involvement and hope that many of this year's volunteers will consider joining the committee next year. Thank you, again, to all who shared their efforts and creativity! PARENTS COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON - "COMMUNITY SERVICE: ITS PURPOSE, IMPACT, AND PROGRAMS WITHIN OUR SCHOOLS" Tuesday, January 28, 2014 (Snowdate February 4) All SFS parents are welcome to attend the Parents Council of Washington (PCW) “Best Practices” program on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Listen to a panel of service-based learning experts from three member schools as they share what Lower, Middle and Upper school communities are achieving and how students are growing personally, socially, academically and cognitively from community service programs. Many leaders in public service today mention the key role volunteering served to nurture, inspire and shape their lives. By learning that they can impact real social challenges, problems and needs, children gain ownership, find a voice and contribute in meaningful, productive ways. PCW is a non-profit organization fostering communication among parents, students and schools within the greater Washington, D.C. independent school community. Please visit the PCW website or their Facebook page for more information. THE MS USED BOOK FAIR IS COMING!! And… we need your help. Please send in “gently” used paperbacks and hardcover children’s (any age) books for our sale. All proceeds will be donated to a Washington, DC literacy organization. Your book donations may be dropped off at the Middle School Library or left at the Library door during non-Library hours. The MS Used Book Fair will be held at the Middle School on April 20 and April 22-25. Thanks for your support. DIVERSITY CORNER Parents, have you read this year’s Big Read, the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio? Has your middle schooler? Parents might find a Discovery Fit & Health special, “The Girl With Half A Face” relevant and interesting. Clips can be viewed by following this link. The full program will be shown on TLC at 8pm on Wednesday, 1/29. Parents should preview the program before viewing with children. The 5/6 A-ZSU had a dynamic lunch meeting on Monday, January 13th. The group came together to ensure we have a common language to use when talking about issues of identity and diversity. We began discussing scenarios to which various terms might apply and will continue with the discussion at our next meeting, on February 3rd. As usual, all 5th and 6th graders are welcome to attend the 5/6 A-ZSU meetings, even if they have not attended in the past. Please contact Kimberly Clarkson if you have any questions about the 5/6 A-ZSU. We had a delegation of 34 students and 6 faculty members who registered to attend the East Ed Middle School Diversity Leadership conference on Monday, January 27th. The title of this year’s conference is “Embracing Neurodiversity: Affirming All Learners by Challenging Labeling” and was held at Sandy Spring Friends School. No Name-Calling Week Last week, January 20th-24th was No Name-Calling Week. This year’s theme is "Celebrate Kindness". Last Friday, MS students signed a pledge to support no name calling and received an " I Choose Kind' sticker! LINEN DRIVE Got old bed linens, towels, comforters or blankets that you’re ready to toss? Please send them to Middle School ASAP with your nearest and dearest. Usable bed linens, blankets and comforters will find an immediate home at A Wider Circle. Shabby fleece blankets and towels will head to our furry friends at Washington Animal Rescue League. Our “Paws and Claws” Minimester group can use even badly tattered blankets in March to make toys for the cuties in cages. Collection bins are inside the M.S. lobby and in the 5th grade hallway. Contact Susanne Saunders or Lauren Lamb if you have questions. Other News EVENTS FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AUCTION DONATIONS DUE THURSDAY! QUAKER QUOTE "The doctrine that each person has a creative center is commonplace, but few schools anywhere in the world employ a corporate living silence to dramatize the power of this idea. Anyone may speak. Every voice will be honored. We learn from the frontier of silent worship, from listening, from the ministry of shared discovery offered by classmates and colleagues. We experience a spiritual democracy."
