Here's what Greg had sent me re the VP/Alfalfa. I stressed that since I am
no longer in OVP, I really didn't know anything about it. I have no idea
if the ethics advice is right - the President has gone to this and members
of the administration -- but it is certainly understandable that the VP
simply may not wish to deal with this while he is in office. Anyway, would
be great for the Alfalfa folks to have someone to stay connected to in case
he ever wants to rejoin.

"This year his legal and ethics people took up quite a bit of my time with
questions and requests for documentation -- which got my hopes up -- only
to come back to say that he would not attend the dinner AND he was
resigning from Alfalfa because it was a conflict of interest to accept a
complimentary membership (which all US presidents and vice presidents are
offered).

I told them that VP Cheney personally paid his dues when he was in office
to avoid any untoward appearances, but no dice. Actually, I'm not certain
the the Vice President has any idea this happened, though I hope at some
point he was consulted! You may have noticed his name had been dropped
from the member lists in the green booklets on each plate. Sigh! Maybe
he'll come back when he leaves office."
