She's around 15 years old and in such great shape she never misses an opportunity
to climb into your lap!

Rain, Sleet, Snow, SALT...
oh my
OK. You nag your loved ones to dress properly. You've got boots, sweaters, a winter
jacket, hats, mittens and more. But, did you know pets also need protection from
the, cold, rain, sleet, snow ... and all those nasty chemicals we humans put down?
Short haired dogs are at special risk as they simply don't have the undercoat to
keep them warm. And, when it's cold outside your pet's muscles bunch up and their
paws get frozen from the snow.

Here are some cold weather tips, curtesy the ASPCA:


* Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm.
Dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost.

* Wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when s/he comes inside. Snow and ice can
cause her paws to bleed. And, licking off the salt, antifreeze, etc from paws can
make her very sick.

Own a short-haired breed? The cold's harder on them so it's best to dress him/her
in a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base
of the tail to the belly.


*

Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. The car acts as
a refrigerator and your pet can freeze to death.

*

Puppies don't tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs. This can make housebreaking
difficult so you may need to housebreak indoors.


*

Pets need a warm place to sleep in the winter, off the floor and away from drafts.
Now's the time for cozy pet bed, with a blanket and pillow.


*

If you have outdoor cats in your neighborhood, bang on your car hood before you
start your engine. Why? That's where they love to sleep to keep warm.
