Sunday - September 14, 2014 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements HELP IS NEEDED AT THE FOX DEN ON THE WISCONSIN AVENUE CAMPUS FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE NEXT-TO-NEW SALE COLLECTIONS AND VOLUNTEERING JOIN THE 2014/15 AUCTION COMMITTEE! CHANGES TO THE UPPER SCHOOL WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER Events US BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT GAME TIME! FALL SEASON EVENT #2 BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE Other QUAKER QUOTE FOLLOW THE SCHOOL ON SOCIAL MEDIA News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, At Wednesday’s collection, we were honored to welcome Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker, who is this year’s Daryl Reich Rubenstein Guest Artist. Bob delighted us with a humorous presentation about his life’s work as a cartoon artist and editor. An exhibition of his work is on display in the Rubenstein Gallery until October 1. Please take a moment to view his artwork when you are on campus for Back-to-School Night. This week also marked the beginning of the fall grade-level parent conversations with Upper School administration. I have posted the dates of these informal discussions below. I encourage you to attend these morning meetings to share your thoughts and any concerns that arise. The meetings are intended to be an open forum for parents to ask questions and hear directly from administrators. The Upper School administrative team is eager to partner with all of you to ensure that we can create the best school experience possible for our students. These parent conversations will be an important means for us to develop our collaborative relationship. Back-to-School Night takes place this Thursday, September 18, from 6:45 to 9:10 pm. Refreshments will be available in the library. The program will begin in the RLS Meeting Room, followed by a brief visit with your student’s advisor who will hand out your schedule for the evening. You will then visit your student’s classes from 7:15--9:10 p.m. These class sessions are very brief, so we ask that you reserve questions that pertain exclusively to your child for another occasion. Parking in our garage on Back-to-School Night is limited, as our garage simply does not have the capacity to accommodate the thousand parents who attend the evening program. Please be mindful and plan ahead. Street parking is available, but we ask that you be respectful of our neighbors and honor all posted parking restrictions. I look forward to seeing all of you very soon! If interested, contact Marnee Robinson at 202-537-8198. FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE In an effort to work more closely with current families and faculty/staff who are applying a child for the 2015/16 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2014. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2015. The application process is only for students who do not currently attend SFS. This is not reenrollment for currently enrolled students. The online application is available at www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions. NEXT-TO-NEW SALE COLLECTIONS AND VOLUNTEERING Sidwell Friends’ popular sale of quality used items is back, and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! The Next-to-New Sale will be held October 16—18 in Wannan Gym. The sale is part of the Events for Student Scholarships program, and all net proceeds directly benefit student financial aid. All items unfit for sale are recycled. All unsold items benefit local charities. Donate gently used items. Collection times at the Wisconsin Avenue campus will take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00--10:00 a.m., and Saturdays from 9:00—11:00 a.m through Saturday, October 4. We accept clothing (for men, women, teens, children and infant/toddlers), toys, children’s books, shoes, accessories, furniture (no mattresses), housewares, hardware, pet equipment and supplies, office supplies, electronics, music, movies, holiday decorations and costumes, sports equipment, SFS logo clothing, bicycles, and art. We also need shopping bags of all kinds and moving boxes. To view a list of acceptable donations, please click here. Volunteer for an hour or more. There are volunteer jobs for everyone at this event! We need volunteers to organize, price, and set up donations for display, to serve as cashier at the sale, and to clean up post-sale. You can spend as much time helping as you would like—even a few hours is a huge help! To sign up to volunteer, please visit our Volunteer Hub page. This is a great way to meet members of the SFS community! Friends and extended family are also welcome to volunteer. Plus, volunteers with at least three hours of volunteer work get to shop the Pre-Sale. Do you have a truck or large SUV? We are seeking volunteers to help pick up local furniture donations. If you are able to help or are interested in learning more about the Next-to-New Sale, please contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu or at 202-537-8442. Co-Chairs Melanie Jacobsen and Felice Roggen JOIN THE 2014/15 AUCTION COMMITTEE! The 2014/15 Auction co-chairs--Melvin Cauthen, Vanessa Johnson, and Evelyn Nicholas--are seeking enthusiastic parents to join the Auction Committee. These volunteer opportunities have been designed to fit any schedule, whether you are a stay-at-home parent or a part-time or full-time working professional. The majority of the volunteer work can be easily accomplished independently using e-mail and phone in the comfort of your home or office. The Auction Committee is comprised of four subcommittees: Acquisitions Committee (September–January) Solicits and secures donations for the Live, Silent, and Online Auctions. The School provides lists of past donors (both businesses and members of the SFS community) with contact information. Catalog Writing Committee (September– February) Creates catchy descriptions for items in the catalog. Publicity Committee (November–March) Creates buzz about the event and encourages SFS families to make donations as well as to attend the Silent and Live Auctions, which benefit student financial aid. Volunteers are assigned to specific grades and/or divisions. Decorations and Setup Committee (March–April) Helps set up décor, display frames, and tangible items for the Silent and Live Auctions on the day of the event. May assist with other projects as assigned. Please join us in the Zartman Drawing Room on either Tuesday, September 23, from 9:30--11 a.m. or Monday, September 29, from 6:30--9:00 p.m for a fun kickoff meeting where the co-chairs will reveal the auction theme and logo, walk through volunteer responsibilities, and conclude with a fun donation brainstorm. If you're interested in joining the committee or learning more about the Auction, please visit the Auction webpage or contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8442. Don’t forget to save the date for this year’s Auction: Saturday, April 18, 2015! All net proceeds benefit student scholarships at Sidwell Friends. Former students will discuss the challenges they faced, as well as how having been a SFS student has affected their subsequent academic and professional careers. Mark Chichester ’86, Ericka Blount ’90, Lauren Brownlee ’01, Modi Oyewole ’05, and Destiny Franklin ’13 will reflect on their student days and offer strategies for success to current students and parents. Some panelists will also discuss their experience parenting or teaching in the community. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, September 27, 10:00 a.m.--noon. We will be gathering in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Upper School campus. Light refreshments will be served, and care will be available for children who are PK-age and older. Other QUAKER QUOTE "The denomination's name was the Religious Society of Friends. They gave themselves this name because they considered themselves friends of Jesus and "friends of Truth." They were commonly known as Friends, a name that is still used today. There are two stories about the origin of the group's other name. One is that they were called Quakers because they trembled when they prayed. The other story comes from a time when Fox was on trial for heresy. Fox told the judge that he should quake and tremble at the word of the Lord. Fox wanted the judge to understand his belief that God was the most powerful force in the universe. The judge asked Fox sarcastically if he was a "quaker." Fox replied that he was, and the name stuck." Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the parent community at Sidwell Friends School. Suggestions and questions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com. FOLLOW THE SCHOOL ON SOCIAL MEDIA "I downloaded this great picture of my son at the LS Spring Festival!"
