[cid:image003.jpg@01CF1832.5664ED00] Memorandum To: USGLC Board of Directors From: Liz Schrayer Re: Agenda & Schedule for January Meeting Date: January 23, 2014 I am looking forward to seeing you next week. The year ahead is already shaping up to be extremely challenging and I could use your guidance on a range of topics. Between the continued partisan battles, countless foreign policy crises, and extraordinary opportunities to truly impact the smart power agenda, we have some tough choices to make. In preparation for the meetings, a few items: 1. New Addition to Schedule. Wednesday Dinner with OMB Director Sylvia Burwell. I am very pleased that long-time USGLC friend, Sylvia Mathews Burwell just confirmed as our special guest for dinner with the Board for Wednesday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton. You will be receiving a background memo on Monday in preparation. 2. Potential Breakfast. Thursday Breakfast on Capitol Hill. We are still waiting to hear from SFRC members, Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) if they can join us for breakfast on Capitol Hill Thursday morning. If they can, I would strongly encourage you to participate. If neither of them can join us, we will not hold a breakfast. Please note, that I am hosting a private fundraising event at the same time that I know some of you are planning to attend. 3. Background Reading. Given how much is in the news -- Syria, Sudan, Omnibus, Bob Gates' book, and even Bridgegate -- I thought it might be useful to provide a few clips as background for our discussion: § USGLC's Analysis of FY15 Budget<http://www.usglc.org/2014/01/17/a-reboot-for-congress/> § Key Findings from Pew Role on American's View of U.S. Engagement<http://www.pewresearch.org/key-data-points/u-s-foreign-policy-key-data-points/> § Bill Gates' Annual Letter: Myths on Foreign Aid<http://annualletter.gatesfoundation.org/> § Excerpts from Bob Gates' memoirs on smart power<http://www.usglc.org/2014/01/16/the-defense-secretary-who-fought-for-the-state-departments-budget/> § Rand Paul and Foreign Policy<http://washingtonnote.com/rand-paul-boosts-foreign-policy-stock-big-time/> § Raj Shah on Impact Investing<http://www.forbes.com/sites/rahimkanani/2014/01/20/rajiv-shah-and-tony-blair-on-impact-investing/> 4. Meeting Schedule & Agenda. Attached please find the latest schedule and agenda for the meeting. If your plans change or you haven't RSVPed, please contact Rachel Levin at (202) 730-4177 or rlevin@usglc.org<mailto:rlevin@usglc.org> as soon as possible.
