Wednesday - February 5, 2014 From the School Message from Lee The Dance Ensemble Production “Reality vs. Fantasy” will take place on Friday, February 7 at 7:00 PM in the Arts Center Theater. As always, we look forward to an exciting performance from this talented group of dancers! We Read DC is a student-run organization in the Maryland-D.C. area that works to collect and distribute books to underprivileged children of all ages. The Sidwell Friends branch of the organization has been working with Sidwell's "Partner School," DC Prep's Edgewood Elementary. In order to continue our supply of books to give to the kids, We Read DC will have a Book Drive at SFS from Thursday, February 6th to Friday, February 14th. From picture books to small chapter books, basically all books will be accepted and greatly appreciated for the elementary students we work with. There will be collection bins in the Upper School Library. Thank you so much for your help! We are about to begin the conversation about Upper School curriculum and course selection for school year 2014/2015 and below is a timeline that you might find helpful. Attached below is a four-year planning form that students must fill out in consultation with advisors and parents. I encourage you to contact your child’s advisor or Mamadou Guèye, Upper School Academic Dean, if you have any questions throughout the process. Department Heads are also available to answer questions related to their discipline and, as always, please feel free to contact me at any time. Please note that Thursday, February 6, from 7:45 AM to 8:45 AM there will be a 9th Grade Parent Conversation with Upper School Administration in the Choral Room. The focus will be curriculum and course selection, but the discussion will be open. On Thursday, February 13, there will be a 10th Grade Parent Meeting with College Counseling from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the RLS Meeting Room. There will be a presentation on standardized testing. This means you will receive automatic email reminders directly from Magnus Health 6 weeks prior to the due date of your child's next physical examination. All documentation and blank health forms must be submitted via the Parent Portal on the SFS website by clicking on the Update Student Health Information link. Study History, Culture and Language in Southern Spain This Summer Join Señora Muhayya and Señora Berry on a 12 day trip through Sevilla, Granada, and Córdoba. Students will use Spanish to study the period known as the “convivencia” when Jewish, Christian and Islamic cultures coexisted. Morning classes in language and history will help students learn how to get around and appreciate the history embedded in these beautiful cities. They will also learn to sharpen their travel skills by immersing themselves in the culture, learning to ask for directions and to use maps, navigating public transportation, and ordering meals. The trip will run this summer from June 9th through the 21st. It is open to Upper School students currently in Spanish IV or higher level classes. The trip is limited to 6 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration deadline will be Friday, February 14. There will be an informational session for students and parents on Thursday, February 6th at 7:00 pm in Zartman Drawing Room. Questions can also be addressed to Andrea Miano in the Global Studies Office at 202-537-8103 or by e-mail to mianoa@sidwell.edu. Quaker Quotes "A good End cannot sanctifie evil Means; nor must we ever do Evil, that Good may come of it.... It is as great Presumption to send our Passions upon God's Errands, as it is to palliate them with God's Name.... We are too ready to retaliate, rather than forgive, or gain by Love and Information. And yet we could hurt no Man that we believe loves us. Let us then try what Love will do: For if Men did once see we Love them, we should soon find they would not harm us. Force may subdue, but Love gains: And he that forgives first, wins the Lawrel."
