He has conducted extensive research and traveled to Japan, Brazil, Argentina and the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea among other locations. After interacting with Papua New Guinea natives who had never met Westerners, Ekman theorized that all humans express the same, universal emotions. This eventually led him and others to develop the Facial Action Coding System, which remains the gold standard for objectively identifying any movement the face can make. Their work has resulted in widespread applications across society and with the FBI, CIA, and U.S. Department of Defense. Ekman’s recent book, Moving Toward Global Compassion, marks an important trajectory in his half-century of work on facial movement and recognition of emotions. He is now exploring the broader area of understanding how to cultivate and control emotions themselves, a focus that aligns closely with the Institute of HeartMath’s research and mission. (Of note, the closing chapter of Ekman’s book includes a discussion on "global compassion" with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.) Webinar topics include: •What is emotion? Where does it occur in the body? What is its function? •What are the six core emotions? •Why is emotional awareness important to growth and well-being? •What role does emotion play in communication? •What are microexpressions and how can they be used to detect concealed emotions? •What is behind Mona Lisa’s smile? •What skills can we use to improve the quality of our emotional lives?
