Wednesday - September 21, 2011 From the School Message from Lee Please check the School website calendar and Wednesday Newsletter for the most up-to-date information about events. As can sometimes happen, dates, times, and locations of scheduled events are subject to change. Also please note that Friday, November 18 is 9th Grade Parent Conference Day and there is no school for students Grades 9 through 12. This was not printed in the mini-calendar that was mailed to parents over the summer. Back-to-School Night We are looking forward to welcoming you to Upper School Back-to-School Night this Thursday, September 22. The program will begin promptly at 6:45 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room (the Quaker Meeting Room in the new arts building). Programs and name tags will be available there until 6:45 p.m. Please make every effort to be in place by 6:45 for the beginning of the program. To enable the evening to run smoothly, please know the name of your child’s advisor so you can move from the Smith Meeting Room to advisory in a timely fashion. However, the names of advisors will be posted in the hallways as well. Advisors will distribute student schedules from 7:15 – 7:25 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to learn more about the classroom experience this year. I will also be available in the Library throughout the evening if you would like to stop by and chat. See you on Thursday! Peace, Lee Class of 2012 Parents: Reminders from College Counseling Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 pm in the Smith Meeting Room. Please join the College Counselors for a look at the fall term for seniors and a discussion of the college application process. Monday, September 26 at 7:30 am in the Dining Room. Please join Eric Monheim, Director of College Counseling, for an informal conversation and Q & A session. Also, for those parents who have not yet turned in their “Parent Questionnaire,” please do so as soon as possible. The questionnaire can be found in the “Downloadable Forms” section of the College Counseling Website. Admissions Office Announcement In an effort to work more closely with current families who are applying a child for the 2012-13 academic year, the deadline to submit Part I, the Application Form, is October 1, 2011. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2012. The application is available online. Please call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 if you have any questions. Next to New Sale Donate: Only 10 days left to donate your items to the Next to New Sale. Collection times are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-10 and Saturdays from 9-11 in the Wannan Gym on the Upper School campus. We need more donations including bikes, furniture, clothing, housewares, and much more. Plus, if you have moving boxes, please consider donating them to the sale. Volunteer: There are jobs for everyone. You can volunteer one hour or many. Please email the Events for Student Scholarships office for more information about volunteering. In addition, we need dads to get involved. Help us with clean-up on Sunday, October 23. Auction 2012 This year it will be held on campus on Saturday, April 21. Volunteers Needed: Please join us for our first auction kick-off meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 9:00 a.m. in the Zartman Drawing Room. There are jobs for everyone including soliciting donations, set-up, recruiting parents to attend the event, writing descriptions for the catalog, and so much more. Email the Events for Student Scholarships office if you plan to attend the meeting. PA Announcements 11th Grade Hang-out: this Friday Please let your 11th graders know that, weather permitting, there will be an 11th grade pizza hang-out September 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 in the Sledge Garden. There are also several sports events to enjoy Friday afternoon. Encourage them to attend! 9th Grade News & Notes The first 9th Grade Parent Coffee will be held October 3rd at the Whole Foods in Friendship Heights after drop off. This is an informal gathering to help parents get to know each other. No need to RSVP; just show up! The Grade Reps will be ordering their drinks at the coffee counter which is by the street level entrance. Free Parking. Please join us. The 9th Grade Dance is this Saturday, September 24th from 8:30 – 10:30pm in the US Dining Room. Please contact Debra Bolog if you or your child are interested in setting up after school (2:45 pm) on Friday, September 23rd, bringing treats Saturday night, or cleaning up after the dance is over. Parent Peer Group for 9th Grade Parents will be held the night of the dance. After you drop off your child, please join other parents in the Zartman House Drawing Room. This Sidwell Friends tradition provides an opportunity for parents to discuss non-academic issues in a safe and intimate environment. These meetings are for parents only and are facilitated by parents from the class. 9th Grade Reps are still looking for Potluck Hosts for the following fall evenings: October 28, 29, 30, November 4, 5, 6 and November 11, 12, 13. Please contact Jenifer Magliato if you are interested in hosting a small number of randomly assigned 9th grade parents for an intimate potluck dinner. Join in with the Arts The Parents Association Arts Committee needs you - and your thoughts! If you are the parent of an artistically inclined student, or would like to encourage the enjoyment of the arts by all of our students, please consider becoming a part of this standing committee. If interested, please consider attending the Arts Committee's first meeting on Thursday, September 29th, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Upper School Library Board Room, or contact Maude Fish. We look forward to hearing your perspectives! Reading Volunteers Needed Looking for a very rewarding and fun opportunity? Come learn more about our Brightwood Reading Partnership. Parent volunteers read to students at our sister school, Brightwood Elementary School in DC. Last year, volunteers read and donated more than 1500 books to students at Brightwood. A volunteer meeting will be held Friday, September 30th, 8:15 - 9:00 am, in the LS library. For more info, please email Vanessa Johnson, coordinator, or call 301-613-5611.
