BEFAIR EVENTS UPDATE

The BeFair Campaign continues to spread the word about greener
livelihoods throughout DC!

The Happy Hour at Homebody helped us raise funds for 50 kits. Friends
enjoyed an evening of wine while shopping around for unique
furnishings. Homebody is not only an Award Winning Design store but
also a generous and committed GFI supporter!

Homebody donated 20% of the entire proceeds that evening directly to
BeFair to help farmers double their incomes. From our partners in
Guatemala, Thank You.

The Global Fairness Initiative launched the BeFair Campaign to bridge
the bottom of the pyramid technology gap and bring low-cost
technologies to improve livelihoods.

With your support BeFair will deliver over 5,000 Farmer Livelihood
Kits to smallholder farmers in Guatemala. These kits use low-cost
drip irrigation and specialized trainings to help farmers improve
their nutrition and increase their incomes by as much as 50%. Your
contribution of $40 will deliver one irrigation kit plus technical
trainings to an indigenous farming family in Guatemala.

Global Fairness Announces New Board Member Pablo Munoz!

As GFI prepares to enter our 10th year, we convened our Annual Board
meeting in New York with all Board members present, including our
newest Board Member Pablo Munoz, Group President, Latin America for
Tupperware Brands. Mr Munoz brings a strong private sector voice to
the GFI Board as well as unique clarity on the economic empowerment
of women. He represents the leadership of a company that creates
enterprise opportunity for millions of women throughout the world. He
was officially welcomed to the Board on September 18, 2011 in New
York City at an event held at the Harold Pratt House. Mr. Munoz joins
a prestigious international group of leaders from Government, Private
Enterprise, and Grassroots Organizations that form the Foundation of
GFI's multi-stakeholder approach to economic development. Read Press

September in NY

With the Clinton Global Initiative and the United Nations General
Assembly in town, September has become the hot time of the year to be
in NYC. As leaders in their respective fields, our Board engaged in
multiple events to address global challenges and advance strategies
to lift workers throughout the world into more sustainable markets.
In the words of Board member Reema Nanavaty, "first and foremost is
organizing (...) it's a first, a must, and no shortcut to that."

At the Clinton Global Initiative, new friend and partner "Healthy
Cities" presented with leading experts in the waste management
industry on the importance of formalization to integrate the poorest
workers in the waste value chain - a true waste to wealth initiative.

The GFI Board reception was a fun night in Manhattan bringing

Feature: Invest in Women; Develop Nations

Only four African countries are likely to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals (MDG) by 2015, says a recent World Bank report.
Among the eight MDGs, the third one is of utmost importance to
improve these indicators and build sustainable economic relief
despite the current recession: promoting gender equality and
empowering women.

Throughout the world studies have proven time and again that women
are inclined to reinvest a much larger percentage of their income
into their families and communities than are men. Empowering women
leads to decreased maternal and infant mortality rates, increased
child survival rates, and greater opportunities for education.
Studies have even shown that countries with greater gender equality
have lower poverty rates. At GFI, we see a robust and sustained
investment in women producers as one of the single most effective
strategies to break the cycle of poverty in the developing world.
Empowering women farmers and producers requires a multi-faceted,
multi-stakeholder engagement process aimed at creating opportunities
for improved input and access to credit, removal of institutional and
supply chain barriers, and access to high-value markets and policy
reforms.

From emerging democracies in the Middle East to growing economies in
Latin America, it is clear that moving forward requires the equal
participation of all humanity. Governments that represent only half
their population cannot achieve trust; markets that trade among only
half of the world’s population cannot find stable economic growth.
Today we are urged to do whatever it takes to make growth more stable
and sustainable. There is only one solution -- let’s make it
inclusive.
