Dear Hunter,


Last months unprecedented earthquake along the Eastern Seaboard left a fracture in the Washington Monument. That defect may end up serving not just as an unpleasant repair job for the National Park Service, but as a lasting symbol for events we never thought would or could happen:


A hurricane that turned New England upside down;
Tornadoes that killed hundreds and forced thousands from their homes across the Southeast;
And, indeed, the earthquake that forced an evacuation of the White House and hundreds of buildings across the Capital.

It seems like every month, another Not-in-a-Hundred-Years event happens.


However, our adjustment to Mother Natureshouldnt mean surrendering to her, nor to the threat of terrorism.


Last week, in anticipation of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Save the Childrens U.S. Programs released our fourth annual report card on the preparedness of all 50 states and the District of Columbia to protect kids during disasters. The report focuses on the ability of schools and child care facilities to protect the 67 million kids in their care on any given day across the nation.


While many states have made progress over the past several years, only 17 states meet our four minimal requirements for preparedness. That means, in 33 states and in D.C., parents cant be assured that, when they drop their kids off at school or child care, plans are in place to protect them.

Finally, the Annie E. Casey Foundation released a new report last month revealing skyrocketing childhood poverty rates across three dozen states, reversing declines that took place throughout the 1990s.
