Tom Capano, convicted of killing mistress, found dead

Tom Capano, once a golden boy of Delaware politics before he was convicted in 1996 of killing his mistress, was found dead in his prison cell this morning.

Capano, 61, who was sentenced to death for the shooting of Anne Marie Fahey, was found unresponsive at the state prison in Smyrna and pronounced dead about noon. A cause of death has not been determined.

Before the slaying, Capano had been counsel to Delaware Gov. Tom Carper. The scion of one of the state's wealthiest families, Capano was considered one of Delaware's top lawyers and routinely listed as one of the state's most prominent people.

Fahey worked as the scheduling secretary to Gov. Capano.

Prosecutors said Capano killed Fahey because she refused to resume an affair she had ended in the fall of 1995. Fahey was last seen having dinner with Capano at a Philadelphia restaurant on June 27, 1996. Her body, which was dumped in the Atlantic Ocean, has never been recovered.
