There was a meeting with Sherry Galloway and Dan Zenka and the NFL where the NFL informed them that they were already doing a great deal with prostate cancer via the AUA's Know Your Stats campaign -- the biggest program no one has ever heard of. Then two separate petitions were created by survivors, one by Gabe Canales and one by I think Malecare. The results were that less than 10,000 people or to put it in stadium terms less than one seating section of an NFL stadium signed the petition. Gabe Canales reached out to the NFL's marketing people and they were monitoring the petitions but there was certainly not a stadium's worth of people concerned enough to sign their name to get the NFL turned blue. I happened to be at an event put on by Mike Smith and spent a good amount of time with the NFL's lobbyists. Again, they pointed to the AUA campaign and then moved on to other issues -- this was during the lock-out so they had a few other things on their mind. From the NFL's perpsective they have an issue with women. They would like to see more women watching games and buying merchandise. You may have also noticed yesterday that the NFL was running adds for its new line of women appropriate NFL gear. I think they would like to get rid of the image of the "football widow" and make the sport something that the whole family partipates in. Also, the NFL has problems with sex scandals/domestic violence with its players and there is some good scientific data that Sunday nights show a spike in domestic violence. The NFL owns men. Until men refuse to watch, buy tickets, and buy merchandise there is no reason from a financial and marketing perspective for the NFL to invest in prostate cancer on the same scale as breast cancer. Finally and certainly not least, breast cancer has turned it issue into a social phenomena that has nothing but upsides for the NFL at this time. It is truly a win-win situation. Until we can generate legions calling for change we will remain "locked-out" of football. --Skip On Mon, Oct 3, 2011 at 9:46 AM, Mitch Laurance <mlonthegreen@aol.com> wrote: > *Hello all. > ** > http://www.nfl.com/pink* > > *Not sure how many of you saw any of the games yesterday, but at some > point this month all of the NFL teams will be wearing pink for Breast Cancer > Awareness month. > Last night, watching the Jets/Ravens game, I had to smile in true awe and > respect for the effort the women have made.
